“I’ve been extremely nice, because I’ve been working very hard and I graduated! Eh, I worked very hard leh, you know! At the start of the year, I was trying to balance both work and school, and I managed to survive.

I really put in a lot of effort. For example, after filming, I would rush home to complete my school project and would not sleep until it was done. And I think I’ve been really nice because you know with group projects, sometimes people just don’t pull their weight, but I would never do that. So that’s very nice and responsible, right!? (Laughs)”

“I guess, naughty? I wasn’t in Singapore for the longest time this year. I think I spent at least half to three-quarters of 2019 overseas, so I guess I was naughty because I didn’t spend enough time at home with my family.

I think even my dogs have kinda gotten used to me not being home as much because I’ve realised that they, especially Hoshi, have become less ‘sticky’ to me. It’s quite obvious nowadays. I guess it’s punishment for me not being around as often.”

“I think I’ve been… naughty? Because I have a bit of a rebellious streak. For example, when people ask me to do something, I will purposely go against them and challenge their patience. Yep, I’m actually like that. (Laughs)”

“Of course I’ve been both naughty and nice lah, but I think I was nicer. The nicest thing I did was probably arranging Felicia [Chin]’s surprise birthday party without making it there myself. (Laughs) I wasn’t feeling very well so I said, guys, I think I’m going to have to rest at home.

Organising it took a little bit of sneaking around behind her back, asking Jeffrey [Xu] about her schedule and all that, but it didn’t take that much effort lah. Nowadays with WhatsApp, it’s very easy - you just need to set up a group chat where everyone chips in.”

“On screen, I’ve been a bit naughty, but off screen, I’ve been a little nicer. Hopefully! (Laughs) I guess it’s because I’ve started to like myself a bit more now, and I’m growing to love the people around me a bit more as well.

The nicest thing I did was probably spending my birthday thinking of other people instead of just myself. I decided that instead of celebrating my birthday, I wanted to honour certain people in my life, so I spent a few hours in town buying gifts for about 16 people whom I wanted to thank. I actually prayed about what I should buy for them because I wanted to give them something that would really touch and bless them, instead of just getting the same thing for everybody.”

“He’s been both naughty and nice. Naughty in the sense that, sometimes, when I’m speaking to him, he still struggles to listen. (Laughs) And I have to repeat myself again and again! This has been an annoying part of our relationship so far, but I also see that he’s growing and changing, which is the nice part.”

“I’ve been very naughty because I haven’t been watching my diet. (Laughs) I’ve been travelling overseas quite often, so I’ve been feasting quite a bit as well, and with Christmas and all coming… yeah, so very naughty.

My New Year’s resolution last year was actually to become lean and fit, but I don’t think I’ve hit my target weight. Not even close - I’m like three kilograms off! It doesn’t sound too bad, but I had only wanted to lose those three kilograms, but instead, I gained weight and then lost it, reverting to my original weight. (Laughs)”

“I think I’ve been nice this year, because I just brought my family on a trip to Korea. I promised to bring them overseas two years ago, but it didn’t happen last year due to scheduling issues, so I finally managed to fulfil my promise this year. I sort of sponsored the whole trip lah, but I left the planning to my brother because he’s been to Korea quite a few times already. I just forked out the money. (Laughs)”

“I think she’s been very nice too. Hong Ling is quite introverted, so she doesn’t really like to talk much to other people, including her own family, but when she went on this trip to Korea with us, she was quite talkative! I think she was trying to put in more effort to talk to my family, and this was only her first time travelling with them.

Another thing that touched me was how Hong Ling would take initiative to help my mum climb up the stairs. My mum’s legs aren’t so good, so sometimes she has trouble doing that by herself. I was very moved when I saw that.”

“I think overall, I’ve been nice this year. When I was stationed in Taiwan while filming All is Well, I made sure to be extra guai (obedient) because I was representing Singapore and the company, so I tried not to give too many problems. Even though I had a very hectic ‘oh my god’ schedule, I always went ahead without any complaints.

I also spent more time with my parents, bringing them to IKEA and all. (Laughs) I’ve been very busy these past few years, so me squeezing out about four hours to go shopping with them probably meant a lot to them because in the past, I would have just dropped them off and gone to work instead of going inside with them.”

“I think I’ve been really nice this year, because after all that I’ve been through, there’s no reason to be naughty. I’ve learned to be kinder to myself and to love myself on a deeper level. Before I became unwell, I was very self-critical and I didn’t know how to love myself, according to my husband [former actor Alan Tern].

For example, I used to push myself extremely hard [at work]. Even giving my 100 per cent was not enough. But now, I actually give myself time to rest! In the past, I didn’t even know how to slack. Because of my perfectionist streak, I would revisit a scene over and over again even though it was already finished. Now, I know that I’ve done my best and I’ve learned to give myself a proper break, even if it means doing nothing.”

“When I was younger, I was naughty, but this year, I’ve been very nice. (Laughs) I spent more time with my family, and that’s a good thing because last year, I didn’t get to do that as much.

The nicest thing I did was probably taking leave whenever I didn’t have filming to go back [to Malaysia] to surprise them, and I love taking videos of their faces because their expressions are so priceless, especially my mum’s! When I arrive, she will usually start crying and I enjoy seeing that because it makes me feel like I’m very important. (Laughs)”

“I have been very nice because I surprised a lot of people and made them very happy by coming back to Singapore to spend Christmas with them! My mum was like, ‘Huh, back for so long? No need to work ah?’ She’s so used to my working style from when I was still with Mediacorp, which had no night and no day. (Laughs)”

“I think I’ve been nice, but I’m also trying to be more naughty. (Laughs) The nicest thing I did would have to be when I joined Mediacorp Cares to hang out with the elderly folks at one of the community centres. This was… (Checks phone) Eh! That was last year. Sorry. But I did something similar again this year lah. (Laughs)

I said I want to be more ‘naughty’ in the sense that I want to explore things a little bit more. Sometimes I feel like we confine ourselves too much, so I want to be able to use my time to experience more things, such as finally getting my driving licence! I’ve been putting it off for three years, and I’m finally going to do it next year.”

“I’ve been nice, because they always say that if you’re nice, Santa will give you good gifts, and I think I received a lot of good gifts this year, so I think I’ve been a good boy. (Smiles)

The nicest thing I did was… oh, I listened to my mum and participated in Star Search, which a lot of boys my age wouldn’t do because they don’t listen to their parents. (Laughs) I’m just kidding. And the best gift I’ve received is everything that I’ve learned throughout this journey, but I also spent all my annual leave [from my old job] on the competition, which is the naughty part. (Laughs)”

“Why be nice? Nice is boring. (Laughs) Of course I’ve been naughty lah! [What’s the naughtiest thing you did?] I’m not gonna say. The point about naughty things is you don’t talk about them. I guess only Santa will know what I did, but he doesn’t exist, does he?”

“Naughty lah! (Laughs) I like to disturb people, so I played a lot of pranks throughout the year. There wasn’t really one big prank, they were mostly small ones like, for example, when I was doing an Instagram takeover for Star Search, I took the camera, asked all my friends to come gather around me, hit the record button, and then shout so loud that they all got scared and jumped. Then I just posted the video. (Laughs)”

“Hmmm… I’ve been nice. I’m always nice. I’m naughtily nice. (Laughs) Nah, I’ve been nice, full stop, because I haven’t been not nice, so that equals to: I’m nice! (Laughs) I try to be a kind and gracious person to everyone.”
