Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh recently posted a picture on her Instagram account with the best-selling book, 'Billion Dollar Whale: The Man Who Fooled Wall Street, Hollywood, And The World’.
The book focuses on Malaysian fugitive Jho Low, who was an integral part of the 1MDB scandal, of which former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak is said to have played a part in as well. It was later reported that Michelle will be making her first foray into production, as a producer for the upcoming movie adaptation of ‘Billion Dollar Whale’.
Calling it a “brilliantly reported new book”, Michelle shared her love for the “fascinating book” on social media, a move that did not go down well amongst netizens. As a prominent actress, Michelle has been conferred a number of titles by the Malaysian government; she has also been vocal about her support for former Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak, and has canvassed for votes at a political rally.
Thus, her sudden support of ‘Billion Dollar Whale’, as well as the announcement that she will be producing the movie adaptation, did not sit well with the public.
Executive director of the Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4), Cynthia Gabriel, put Michelle on blast online, sharing pictures of the actress’s Instagram post, and branding her a “cheap opportunist”, who has “no place in the new Malaysia”. Malaysian politician, Hannah Yeoh also waded into the fray, commenting, “Not all Yeohs are made equal”.
Netizens have also flocked to leave comments on Michelle’s post, expressing their displeasure. However, some have also stood up to defend Michelle, writing, “Different people, different choices”.
