Louise Lee excited to work with Rui En again

The veteran Hong Kong actress will make a special appearance in ‘Old Is Gold’

Louise Lee excited to work with Rui En again

It might have been eight years since veteran Hong Kong actress Louise Lee filmed a drama in Singapore, but the 68-year-old is raring to go as she remarked that coming back to the Little Red Dot is “always work where I don’t feel like I’m working”.

She will be making a special appearance in upcoming longform drama, Old Is Gold, and will be filming in Singapore for a little under two weeks before heading back to Hong Kong to continue performing her musical, Secret.

“I’ve seriously considered relocating to Singapore a couple of times. It’s safe, it’s clean, it’s beautiful, but there’s always one thing that stops me,” the actress said with a sigh. “The weather – it’s unbearably hot year-round.”

Another reason why she’s more than happy to return here for work: the working hours.

“When I come to Singapore, I don’t have to worry about inhumane working hours,” she said with a chuckle. “No matter how busy the schedule is and even if I have to work past midnight, I know that I’ll always be able to get a few hours of sleep at night. This time around, they even planned my schedule so that my evenings are free and I’m able to tour the city in my spare time.”

That being said, it’s not just the relatively less busy work schedule that prompted Louise to say yes to this role. “There are some roles that I personally won’t take. If I have to act as a sick person who’s always laying on the bed, or a deranged person, I’d prefer not to take up that role. It’s not that those roles don’t need acting chops, it’s just something that I’ve drawn the line at doing,” she explained. “Of course, if there’s another layer to the character, then I would consider taking up the role.”

Louise Lee and Rui En in The In-Laws

Needless to say, her role in Old is Gold had nothing of that, although she stopped short from telling us exactly what the twist to her character is, because, in her words, “I don’t have many scenes in this drama, so if I tell you what’s interesting about my character, I think I’ll end up telling you my entire storyline!”

Point taken.

She was, however, more than happy to be sharing the screen with familiar faces like Rui En, who played her daughter-in-law in The In-Laws.

“Honestly, I don’t really have that deep an impression of Rui En,” Louise said with a chuckle. “But I don’t mean that in a bad way. My memory of her is that she’s one of the quieter ones. Even then, I could tell that she’s a nice, polite girl who did her homework, and was serious about her acting.”

At the time, Louise and Rui En didn’t share many scenes, but the veteran actress laughed when she recalled her scenes with Cynthia Koh, who also played her daughter-in-law.

“We had to bicker so much while filming The In-Laws, and through that, I remember her well as a very talented actress,” she smiled. “I can’t say what it’s going to be like working on (Old is Gold) this time, but I hope that I’ll be able to go back home with some precious memories this time around too.”

Old is Gold debuts on May 28 and airs Mondays to Fridays at 7.30pm on Channel 8 and Toggle.
