Fans, friends and family members of Ellen Joyce Loo turned up at Hong Kong Funeral Home to bid a final farewell to the late singer-songwriter on Monday (Aug 13). The 32-year-old had fell to her death from a high-rise building on August 5 in what was reported as a suicide.
Industry veteran Anthony Wong, who discovered Ellen when she was 15 arrived at the venue at 3pm. Dressed in an all-black suit and shades, he had a somber expression on his face and kept silent throughout.
Award-winning actress and singer Prudence Liu was, similarly, heartbroken and the 53-year-old declined all interviews, saying, “[I] don’t wish to talk [about it].”
Ellen’s industry friends and fellow celebs such as Gigi Leung, Sammi Cheng, Khalil Fong, Kary Ng, Eason Chan and his wife, Josie Ho and her husband were also spotted at the farewell ceremony.
Several flower wreaths lined the entrance, including one sent by Sandy Lam and her partner Jun Kung and a wreath from Khalil whose final message to Ellen read: “May music continue to lift your soul.”
Ellen’s spouse, Fisher Yu, was overcome with grief, according to Hong Kong media. She had picked a photo she took of Ellen during a trip to Paris last year as her postmortem photo, hoping to “immortalise” her smile.
Throngs of fans turned up to pay their last respects and the queue stretched to Java Road playground in the neighbourhood.
Ellen was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2013 and took a one-year hiatus to seek treatment. She made headlines in 2017 when she came out publicly as a lesbian during her acceptance speech for Best Arrangement award at the 28th Golden Melody Awards.
