There’s been a lot of buzz around Kang Daniel recently.

The former centre of Wanna One – the hugely popular project group that was made up of the most popular 11 Produce 101 Season 2 contestants – finally made his solo debut six months after the band took their final bow in a highly emotional concert.

His debut album, Color On Me, sold over 340,000 copies on its first day, and has since gone on to break more records as over 450,000 copies were snapped up within the first week. With that, he also became the highest-selling solo artiste in the history of the Hanteo Chart, one of Korea’s most reputable album charts.

As part of his album promotions, he is also going on an Asia tour to meet his fans, and Singapore is first on his hit-list. His show will be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium tonight (there’s still time for you to get tickets to the show), making him the first Korean solo artiste to command the venue for a fan meeting, which can typically seat up to 10,000 fans.

A day before his fan meeting, he met the media in a press conference – the only one during his multi-city tour – held at the Intercontinental Singapore. Fun fact: The ballroom that he used was the exact same one that Wanna One was in during their first visit to Singapore.

Breezing into the room shortly after 4pm, Daniel spoke at length about his album, and while he needed the translator to translate his answers from Korean, he had no difficulties understanding the emcee’s questions, which were posed to him in English.

Unfortunately, the media was not allowed to pose questions. An unusual move, but perhaps it was for the best, just in case awkward questions like those concerning his dispute with his former company LM Entertainment, or him going public with his girlfriend, TWICE’s leader Jihyo, were asked.

But we digress. He started the ball rolling by admitting how he feels the pressure of taking on the stage on his own, as opposed to when he had 10 other group members up there with him.

“It seems like the stage got bigger (since I’m a soloist now),” he mused. “With the 11 members, the amount of energy that we had was very powerful, but now that I’m alone, I have to cover every area of the stage on my own. I have my dancers to help me, but at the same time, I feel like I need to be more responsible in showcasing myself better.”

Daniel also tackled questions on the songwriting process for his album, as he hilariously shared that his song, ‘Horizon’, was inspired by Thanos. He chuckled that as a Marvel fan, his favourite superhero is Spiderman.

The last track on his album, however, was inspired by his fans. Titled ‘I Hope’, Daniel explained, “I think fans look the prettiest when they’re smiling. I hope they’ll always have a reason to smile.”

His love for his fans was also apparent when the topic of breaking records came into the picture. When asked about the goals he has set for himself in the years ahead, he stated matter-of-factly, “I don’t think that’s important, and I haven’t thought about that. To me, making my fans happy is the most important. If I can make music that make my fans happy, that’s enough for me. As for records, rather than chasing after them, I believe that by making music for my fans, these achievements will come naturally.”

Kang Daniel Fan Meeting: Color on Me in Singapore will be held tonight, August 16, 8pm at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Tickets are priced from S$98 and are available on SportsHubTix.
