In late November, Etta Ng, Jackie Chan’s estranged daughter with former Hong Kong actress Elaine Ng, made headlines when she got married to her girlfriend Andi Autumn in Canada.
The 19-year-old recently returned to Hong Kong and did a no-holds-barred interview with Apple Daily where she shared her thoughts about her famous father, who, to date, has not publicly acknowledged her, as well as how she discovered her sexuality at a young age.
According to Etta, she once had a girlfriend when she was in kindergarten, but only confirmed her suspicions that she had a thing for girls when she was in primary 6 and was not interested in discussing about boys with her fellow classmates.
She had a hard time “coming out”, said Etta, who did not wish for her sexual orientation to become a talking point, and chose to keep it a secret. Etta added that she went as far as to “date” a boy to get on her mum’s good books and to reassure her.
“It was all a show for my mum,” she said during the interview.
So how is Elaine taking the news of Etta’s marriage to Andi?
“She’s a very traditional woman, it’s harder for her to accept [it]. When she sends me messages, she will use ‘you and your friend’ and not ‘you and your wife’,” Etta replied with a sigh, adding that Elaine may need more time to come to terms with it.
Due to a brief affair her mother had with Jackie, Etta has been given all sorts of labels – “illegitimate” or “estranged” daughter of Jackie Chan. She explained that her previous video shout out to Jackie, which was filmed when she was homeless with no place to go, was not done for monetary gains despite her expressing a desire to meet him.
“I needed an answer,” she explained.
Etta added that the biggest question on her mind right now for the action superstar who fathered her is: “Can you let me know what happened when I was younger? (…) Why did my mother become like this? Have you guys talked about this?”
She also debunked rumours that Jaycee Chan, her brother from another mother (Joan Lin), wants to meet her and said that she does not know him at all.
Etta’s desire to reconnect with Jackie and seek answers to her questions may just be wishful thinking on her part – Jackie’s soon-to-be-released tell-all memoir contained no information about her or her mother, although he did admit to his affair with Elaine in the book.
