In 2019, Hongkong actress Lee San-san shocked fans when she revealed that she was battling panic disorder. The 1996 Miss Hongkong opened up about her struggles and how she was thankful for celeb pals like Sammi Cheng and Louis Koo who rallied behind her.

The 43-year-old, who is the ambassador for Hongkong’s Mental Health Foundation, recently hosted a radio show where she shed further light on her struggles and the cause of her illness.

San-san revealed that in the early days of her battle with the illness four years ago, she would often experience breathing difficulties, sudden heart palpitations, and blurred vision. She consulted various specialists, and it was only after meeting psychiatric specialist Dr Lau Ying Kit that she found out she was suffering from panic disorder.

One of the causes, she said, was due to her strong personality. "Ever since I entered showbiz at the age of 18, whenever I encountered problems, I would have to face them myself. This is a very high-pressure industry. How can I stand up if I am not tough? Over time, the buildup of negative emotions was too much to bear and I exploded,” she said.
