Court trials for Chinese actor Gao Yunxiang (also known as Gavin Gao)’s sexual assault case in Australia have started, with the lawyers for both defendants, Yunxiang and Chinese producer Wang Jing, summoning witnesses to the stand.
Recently, during the seventh court hearing for the case, Yunxiang’s lawyer requested for the female production crew member who had accused the duo of sexual assault to take the stand as well. Yunxiang’s lawyer shared that he found that there were notable discrepancies in her testimonies, and that he wished to cross-examine her in court.
At press time, the courts have yet to make a decision. However, if the courts decide to accede to their wishes and summon the accuser to the stand, it could cause additional trauma for her, especially if she has to face Yunxiang again.
A local Chinese lawyer also revealed that Wang Jing’s secretary had once approached the accuser privately, and that he might summon another witness to the stand, believed to be their ‘trump card’ to winning the case.
Yunxiang was in Sydney filming a TV series called Love in Aranya when he and Chinese producer Wang Jing were accused of sexual assault against a female production crew member at the Shangri-La hotel after the wrap party.
After being initially detained and denied bail, the 35-year-old was released on bail late last month and is currently residing in Australia with his wife, Chinese actress Xuan Dong, and their 2-year-old daughter.
