Francis Ng Made S$14K From Live Streaming During Quarantine And Donated It All To A Kid With Leukaemia

Remember the old saying “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”? Well, in Francis Ng’s case, the ‘lemons’ were 14 days of mandatory quarantine after arriving in China to start work on his new film, and the ‘lemonade’ he made was a cool 70,000 yuan (S$13,800) — an admirable feat considering the number of stories we’ve heard about his fellow celebs having almost no income due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So how did he do it?
Instead of idling around while in self-isolation (which we wouldn’t have blamed him for if he did), Francis decided to make full use of his time and started doing live streams on Weibo, during which he interacted with fans and engaged in all kinds of random and amusing antics, such as telling stories, trying on face masks, and doing flawless imitations of other stars.

It turned out to be a very lucrative ‘side gig’. Like other live stream apps, Weibo lets users send virtual gifts to their favourite streamers, which can then be cashed out for real money. Last week, Francis posted a detailed breakdown of his earnings and revealed that he had made a cool 70,127.12 yuan (S$13,800). Not bad at all.
However, he’s not keeping any of it for himself. The 58-year-old went on to share that a kind-hearted netizen had sent him a message about trying to help a boy named Jiahao, who is currently undergoing treatment for leukaemia. As a father to an 11-year-old son himself, Francis was clearly moved.
“We then got in touch with Jiahao’s mother through this netizen and learned that everyone is very concerned about his situation,” he wrote. “After some discussion, we decided to give all our earnings from this live stream activity to Jiahao’s mother. We hope to be able to do our part, and we wish Jiahao a happy childhood!”
