October seems to be an auspicious month for celeb wedding announcements.

Former Ch 8 actress Tracy Lee, 32, started the ball rolling with an A-list wedding at Shangri-La Hotel at the beginning of the month.

And 28-year-old Ch 8 Duke Xu Bin surprised all when he announced last week that he had registered his marriage and would be holding his wedding at Orchard Hotel on Nov 3.

Yesterday, former Ch 8 star Apple Hong tells us in a one-to-one interview that she had gotten married last week. However, she declines to elaborate on the details, telling us that “my husband is a very private person”.

The 39-year-old, who’s now a Singapore Permanent Resident, left Mediacorp in 2011 to pursue an acting career in China, and returned in 2015 due to her engagement.

The last Ch 8 drama she starred in was The Queen (2016), where she acted alongside Jesseca Liu, Jayley Woo, Vivian Lai, and Priscelia Chan.

She’s now speaking to us at the press con of her upcoming Chinese play Sole Mate, which will run at the Victoria Theatre on Dec 8 and 9.

The play, which also stars local voice talents Lorraine Tan and Tay Sia Yuen as well as new actor Brian Ng, tells the story of three married women and the problems they face in their lives.

Apple plays Margaret, a housewife and mother-of-three whose marriage has grown stale over the years.

The jovial actress laughs: “The role is very different from who I am in real life. Margaret got married in her 20s, and spent her life taking care of her children and family. She didn’t get a chance to pursue her dreams and is left thinking of the ‘what ifs’.”

She adds: “As for me, there was no rush to get married in my 20s. I did all the things I wanted to including going to China to act. I came back two years ago because I felt that it’s about time I settled down (laughs).”

8 DAYS: We hear that your longtime boyfriend proposed to you in 2015, and you mentioned back then that you weren’t in a hurry to get married anytime soon. So, did you eventually get married in the last two years?
APPLE HONG: (Smiles) Yes, I’m someone’s wife now. In fact, we just registered for our marriage last week on Oct 10!

Congrats! Can you tell us more about your other half?
Hmm, my husband doesn’t like me talking about him in the media as he’s very low profile, so I won’t reveal his age or name. He’s Singaporean and is a businessman. We met at a work event and dated for 10 years before we got married. In fact, Tracy Lee invited me to her wedding in Singapore earlier this month but I was preparing for my wedding in Kuala Lumpur so I couldn’t make it.

How did you manage to keep it under wraps for so long?
(Guffaws) Tracy asked me the same thing. She was telling me that her wedding was in the news. As for me, I didn’t really post about it as I wanted it to be a simple affair. I have my own ways to keep it a secret!

Can you tell us more about the wedding in Kuala Lumpur?
It’s a really small wedding, we invited about 50-60 family and friends and had a simple banquet. I chose to hold it in Malaysia as most of my relatives live there. That’s about it (smiles).

You mentioned that you weren’t rushing to get married after your engagement. What made you change your mind?
I’m as carefree as a bird, and I don’t like to be tied down. That’s also why I’m always travelling around, and that’s also why I went to China to pursue an acting career. However, in the past two years, the way I think started to shift. I felt that I’ve played enough (laughs). I’ve released an EP, I’ve tried acting, I’ve hosted, and I’m currently doing part-time DJ-ing on local radio station. Now, I even have the chance to act in a play. In a way, I’ve really done everything. Over the years, I’ve seen people around me get married, and I feel that it’s time for me to play a new role in my life now – a wife.

How do you keep your relationship fresh after 10 years?
It’s been only a week since we got married, so far so good (laughs). Surprisingly, we became even sweeter to each other after marriage even though we’ve been dating for so long. Hmm, to keep the relationship fresh – act cute, act blur lor! (Laughs). I think most importantly, don’t take anything too seriously, and always listen to each other. Mutual respect and understanding is very important.

Are you planning to have kids soon?
If we 'accidentally' have a kid, then we will have one. I’m not going to deliberately plan for one. I remember Mark Lee told me that the harder you try, the more difficult it is to see results ‘cos it can be very stressful. But if you don’t try too hard, sometimes it just happens!

Sole Mate shows at Victoria Theatre On Dec 8, 8pm, and Dec 9, 3pm and 8pm. Tickets from sistic.com.sg
