Fan Bingbing receives S$31,000 from netizen for posting hate comments about her

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing’s legal team has been hard at work. Last December, netizens found that the actress had filed as many close to 100 lawsuits for unlawful use of her portrait rights, of which at least five have been concluded. The five cases were reported as having awarded the actress S$470,000 in compensation.

Recently, news reports shared that Bingbing has won another lawsuit. This time, it was against a netizen who had defamed her numerous times.

According to a statement released by Bingbing’s legal representatives, the Beijing Xingquan Law Firm, an online netizen identified as Mr. Chen updated his Weibo with posts targeting Bingbing from last July.

The posts accused Bingbing of having "improper relationships", among other untruths. Her team argued that these posts damaged Bingbing’s reputation.

The courts later found that the actress suffered from defamation as a cause of his posts, as photos of Bingbing uploaded in the said posts made it clear that the person Mr. Chen was talking about was her.

They concluded that the public could have been misled by Mr. Chen’s posts, this therefore worsened the public’s impression of her.

As a result, the courts ordered Mr/ Chen to pay damages amounting to RMB$161,500 (approximately S$31,000) to Bingbing, as well as publish an apology on his page.
