On August 20, Forbes released their annual China Celebrity 100 list, which profiles actors, singers, hosts, directors, scriptwriters, composers, models, athletes and other public figures.

The ranking takes into account the activities from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019. Those who are considered outstanding, or have had a bumper year will be ranked and included in the list and their performance is ranked in a number of predetermined categories. Influencers and celebrities are not included in the list.

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, who previously topped the list for five years in a row, was notably absent from the list. Netizens started speculating about the reason for this, and the general consensus is that the actress' absence is entirely due to her tax evasion scandal, which caused her to take a hiatus from the spotlight for close to a year.

Topping the list this year is Chinese actor Wu Jing, whose involvement in the 2019 film, The Wandering Earth propelled him to stardom. Next up are Chinese actors Huang Bo and Hu Ge. Chinese actor Xu Zheng, who won the Golden Horse Award for Best Actor this year for his performance in Dying to Survive rounds up the top four.

Taiwanese multi-hyphenate Jay Chou, who ranked nine last year, has jumped up to fifth place, followed by Chinese actor Shen Teng, Chinese actress Zhou Dongyu, Chinese singer-actor, and member of boyband TFBOYS Jackson Yee, Chinese actress Yang Mi and Chinese singer-actor Kris Wu.

Model-actress Angelababy is the highest ranking Hong Kong celebrity on the list, coming in at 14. Other notable celebs from Hong Kong who made the list are singer William Chan, coming in at 23rd. Actor Louis Koo is ranked 51st, while singer-actor Andy Lau is at 56th, and martial artist Jackie Chan is 69th on the list.

Apart from Jay, other notable Taiwanese celebrities who made it into the list are actor Eddie Peng, at 38th, as well as actor Wallace Huo, who is 66th. Actress Shu Qi made the list as well, at 90th, and singer Show Luo barely made the list at number 99th place.
