Yesterday (Aug 5), Derek announced her demise and thanked everyone who has helped his mum during her illness.

“My mother, Rebecca Chu, passed away on August 3, 2020, from an illness at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. My mother is an extremely private person, so I hope everyone will give us space so we can complete her final journey quietly. On behalf of my mother, I would like to thank everyone for their concern as well as friends who have helped us along the way,” he wrote.

Earlier this year, Rebecca, who had been living in Vancouver, returned to Hongkong for treatment and was spotted making multiple visits to the hospital. Then, Derek said she was just going for routine medical check-ups.

According to reports, she was diagnosed with cancer but her condition improved and was later discharged from hospital. She was admitted again in May and Derek was seen visiting her. 

Though Rebecca was married to one of Hongkong’s most famous stars, she was a very private person and chose to stay out of the limelight. She immigrated to Canada with their two sons, Derek and Mark, in the ‘90s, while Eric remained in Hongkong. Even though the couple had lived apart for more than 20 years, she reportedly held the purse strings and their relationship was not as estranged as everyone imagined it to be.

The 67-year-old comedian was previously married to Taiwanese actress Wang Meihua, the mother of Taiwanese singer-host Bowie Tsang. Meihua is also battling cancer and she underwent surgery for lung cancer last Christmas.

Scandal magnet Eric was most recently linked to his make-up artist Vanus Li after the pair was involved a car crash in Hokkaido in 2018.
