"I went to the hospital last year ’cos I had severe back pain. It was so bad I couldn’t even walk. I thought I had a slipped disc so I called my friend, who’s a doctor, to come to my place to find out what’s wrong. She gave me an injection to relax my muscles and then referred me to another doctor. I went to his hospital, was warded and went for many scans and X-rays. In the end, it wasn’t a slipped disc but a muscle tear. I guess I was working a lot and my posture wasn’t right. I remember asking the doctor repeatedly when I could go back to work as I had to rush back for filming. He chided me and told me that I shouldn’t be working and that I should rest instead. I was discharged a day later and I went straight back to filming! (Laughs)."

I went for an eye check-up at the hospital last year ’cos my dad has glaucoma, and I understand it runs in the family. True enough, there was an onset of glaucoma as my eyes were a little dry and not well-lubricated. So I had a small procedure done late last year. It was a 30-minute day surgery where they made a few laser cuts in my eyes."

This happened five or six years ago. I was preparing for my first music showcase, and I fainted in the middle of rehearsals. I fell flat on the road and injured my face. The scar is still there. I was supposed to be hospitalised for two days but I told the doctor I had to be discharged so I signed some indemnity forms, went for my showcase, and then returned to the hospital where I was warded for another day. My tests came back fine, so I guess I was probably overworked as I was also filming a drama then."

I love going to the hospital! When I was a kid, I was hospitalised almost every month ’cos of asthma. It was a very positive experience for me, though. As a child, I was very afraid of the dark and being lonely, so I felt happy whenever I was at the hospital as there were so many people walking around. The food selection was nice too. The nurses were very relaxed about what I could eat so I always made sure I ordered dessert!"

The last time I went to the hospital was a year ago when I accompanied my dad. He wasn’t feeling well and was dizzy all the time. Turned out his white blood count was so low, it compromised his immune system. I cried when we were at the hospital ’cos I was angry with him for working too hard. It’s not a good feeling to see your family members fall sick. My dad is now working part-time so he’s feeling better already."

"My most vivid memory of being hospitalised was when I had dengue fever many years ago. I was still filming Ch 5 drama Fighting Spiders then. It was such a horrible experience ‘cos I had IV drips on both my hands and I couldn’t move at all. I was really young then so I was staying in the children’s ward. There were babies crying and all. But the nurses were really comforting and they calmed me down."

My mother-in-law passed away in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on May 1. I’ve been to the hospital a lot ’cos my mum and my father-in-law have also been admitted to the ICU in the past. Perhaps that’s why I don’t dread going to the hospital. In fact, I’ve been going to the polyclinic to get mammograms every year. Once, a passerby recognised me and asked why I would go to the polyclinic when I am an actress. I replied: "What’s wrong with coming to the polyclinic? I also pay my taxes! (Guffaws)"

"I went to the A&E department a few years back in the midst of filming Toggle drama A Selfie’s Tale. I was sitting down but when I stood up, I felt a muscle snap in the lower half of my body. I won’t elaborate on where it was but let’s just say that it was at a very ‘vulnerable’ position. The pain was so intense and it didn’t go away for an hour. I remember I was in a wheelchair and the nurse started laughing after I told her that I had hurt a very sensitive part of my body. It was very embarrassing! I requested for a male nurse and male doctor to attend to me, and that’s when I truly understood the importance of having male nurses around! (Laughs)"

"My last visit to the hospital was seven years ago, when my dad had cancer. I actually have a fear of visiting hospitals ’cos I associate them with illnesses and bad stuff. Whenever I step into a hospital these days, I feel sad ‘cos it reminds me of my dad. I’m just grateful that during the last two months of his life, he was really well taken care of by the nurses. I must say that people who work in healthcare are really admirable."
