Some people are like bursts of sunshine from the moment you meet them, but others, like Qi Yuwu, need a little bit more time for you to get to know them better.

This seems to be the general consensus about 715, even among his colleagues, but it turns out that he wasn’t always the unapproachable ‘block of wood’ some may make him out to be (though he is also showing his funny side more and more these days).

In the latest episode of Mediacorp talk show The Inner Circle, the 44-year-old actor revealed that before he left his hometown of Guangzhou to come to Singapore after winning the China round of Star Search in 1999, he actually had a “very lively personality”.

Host Guo Liang seemed genuinely taken aback by this revelation, and asked what happened to make him more reserved.

“When I first arrived in Singapore, my sense of self-preservation was very strong,” Ah Wu explained. “I wasn’t familiar with anything around me, so I was afraid that I would do something wrong. I think it’s only natural to have that fear.”
