Jeanette Aw Is Not Stoopid
She just plays a simple-minded girl very convincingly.
But she does know how to deal with bimbos and himbos, okay? (This article is an excerpt from our cover story in Issue 677, Sept 25, 2002.)
The NUS Theatre Studies grad had a hard time explaining to people who think she's really dumb
"During lunch break at one outdoor shoot [for Holland V, my co-star] Patricia Mok, the director and I went to a food court to eat. A lady sitting directly beside me turned to me and asked, ‘Are you really acting silly?’ And I was like, ‘Of course!’ I mean, what kind of a question is that? It’s not easy acting silly, you know! (Laughs) Other times, people would look at me and go, ‘Look, there’s the silly girl."
She'd never date a himbo
"No! I’d be very bored. Do I have himbo or bimbo friends? Er... (Ed: "We won't make you name names.") Yah! (Laughs) The most common thing to say to start a conversation [with them] would be something like, ‘Oh, nice shirt!’ Very superficial, very frivolous stuff. Something we definitely wouldn’t talk about would be, ‘Oh, what book have you been reading recently?"
If Jeanette wasn't an actress, she'd be a child psychologist.
"All along, I have liked performing. I started with dance and and I was in my school band playing the saxophone; and I also play a little bit of the piano at home. That’s just something I learned on my own — own time, own target kind of thing. Recently, I have also asked someone to teach me the guzheng. At NUS, I did theatre and attended auditions and stuff. My other major was psychology. You can’t act for the rest of your life. There are other things I want to do—like child psychology. To be a practising psychologist, you need a PhD."
