Foodie Friday: What The Stars Ate This Week (May 7-14)

What she ate: Nostalgic hor fun

Yummy factor: It looks like Xiuhuan couldn’t be happier to travel down memory lane with the old-school hor fun from 119 Fish Soup. Not only does it look the part — the silky smooth seafood hor fun is wrapped up in traditional opeh leaf — the comforting dish also boasts amazing wok hei flavour, according to Xiuhuan.

What she ate: Afternoon tea

Yummy factor: Bonnie enjoyed a most indulgent afternoon tea sesh at Hilton Singapore, where she had the Seafood and Prosecco high tea set, nibbling on everything from fresh oysters and lobsters to delicate bakes, savoury bites and bite-sized sliders. There was even an all-pink chocolate fondue platter.

What he ate: Oyster omelette from Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee

Yummy factor: To satisfy his craving for a solid fried orh luak (check out the size of those oysters), Edmund is more than happy to put himself through a hundred sit-ups to burn off the calories. How else to main that six pack, right? Well, we’ll have ours without the torturous workout, thank you very much.

Yummy factor: It’s been a while since Jean, who’s half-Hainanese, managed to get herself some yi bua — a type of Hainanese kueh made with glutinous rice flour — and she couldn’t be happier. Filled with shredded coconut and spicy ginger, these traditional goodies were a childhood favourite of hers, and remind her of her late mum.

What she ate: Homemade butter cookies

Yummy factor: Just before filming concluded for Rui En in upcoming long-form drama The Heartland Hero, the super sweet Bonnie Loo surprised her with butter cookies that she whipped up as a token of appreciation. Well, Rui En certainly felt the love.

What she ate: Mother’s Day dinner

Yummy factor: For the special occasion, Nurul’s family made the effort to prepare a Mother’s Day dinner for the Queen of their lives. Husband Sofian made grilled chicken chop as requested by Nurul, and even simmered black pepper sauce to go with the meat. As for daughter Shaista, her creamy pasta got a thumbs up from mummy.

What he ate: Chicken rice

Yummy factor: It’s no secret that Thomas will travel for food. This time, he headed to Rong Ji’s at Dunman Food Centre, where he had chicken rice and porridge for breakfast. We heard that the owners are looking to sell their recipe, so better head down soon if you want to try.

What he ate: Wanton noodles

Yummy factor: Yixi, along with fellow second-gen stars like Joel Choo, JJ Neo and Tay Ying, had some old school wanton mee with lots of char siew for lunch — a simple meal made precious with the right company. One question though: why's everyone sharing?

What she ate: Sichuan favourites

Yummy factor: With all the baking R&D she’s been doing in preparation for her upcoming patisserie, it’s no wonder Jeanette has no time to cook her own meals. Her choice of food delivery this week was a spicy bowl of mala xiang guo, complemented by tangy suan cai yu for a balanced palette. Yum.

What she ate: Momo’s adorable creations

Yummy factor: As it turns out, Momo may have inherited daddy Alfred Sim’s culinary talent. Both Kewei and Momo got creative in the kitchen with Mission Foods’ kid-sized wraps, where they made everything from bear-shaped pizzas to caterpillar wraps and layered desserts. How cute!

What they ate: Zi char feast

Yummy factor: Rozz introduced Sonia and Tabitha to Long Ji, her go-to spot for crab beehoon (ours too!), and it's probably safe to say that Tabitha is a convert — check out the juicy pincer she had. And interestingly, the Iberico pork they had with fried garlic chips tasted and looked just like beef — could it have been a mix-up? Nonetheless, it was still delish.

What he ate: Birthday nosh

Yummy factor: When you have a cheeky work partner like Justin Ang, you know you’re not going to have your birthday cake without some sort of prank involved. Before he was surprised by Justin with a petite chocolate confection at work, Vernon was presented with a whole roast duck from Mott 32 for his 49th birthday (May 12). At least it was something yummy.

What she ate: Homemade cheesecake

Yummy factor: Now that Apple is staying home more often, she is determined to use up her stash of baking ingredients. She put her supplies to good use by whipping up a delectable pecan pie cheesecake which marries two decadent desserts in one. Talk about indulgence. The best part? The yummy bake is suitable for her ketogenic diet.

What he ate: Local favourites

Yummy factor: A talented colleague cooked up a storm just for Nick, who got to tuck into local favourites like spicy otah, popiah, sambal prawns, butterfly pea flower rice, and more. And there were desserts too, complete with on-point presentation for the dishes. Had Nick not mentioned this, we’d have thought he was dining at a restaurant.

What she ate: Economic beehoon

Yummy factor: Ever the thoughtful mama, Sheila bought breakfast for her Live Your Dream co-stars like Chantalle Ng, who didn’t have time to prepare breakfast. Safe to say, Chantalle couldn’t be happier to tuck into her hearty box of economic beehoon topped with stir-fried cabbage, fish cake and fried egg.

What she ate: Korean BBQ

Yummy factor: Michelle, who turns the big 3-0 tomorrow (May 15), celebrated her birthday in advance with friends — including Denise Camillia Tan — at Eee Mo BBQ, where the Korean BBQ spread looked amazing. Think thick chunks of beef, sinful grilled pork belly, marinated octopus, and lots more. We can't take our eyes off the marbling on the beef.

What she ate: Old-school waffle

Yummy factor: Sometimes, the best things in life can be very simple. For Sonia, nothing beats refueling with a freshly-made old-school waffle in a nondescript paper bag, especially when you’re having a quick break at work and in need of a snack. We can almost smell the pandan aroma from here.

What she ate: French crepes

Yummy factor: Shu An is beyond thrilled to have found family-run resto Entre-Nous Creperie, her new go-to place for authentic French crepes. Not only does the restaurant serve both sweet (with ice cream!) and savoury options, most menu items boast a gluten-free alternative too.

What she ate: Vietnamese food

Yummy factor: Phyllis is always up for Vietnamese food, even when she's in Sydney. This time, her lunch was a beautiful riot of colours, with what looks like a colourful platter of grilled meat and fried rice paper rolls on a bed of raw greens and fresh herbs.
