One particular anecdote that stood out was how Fann dealt with her husband Christopher Lee’s prison sentence in 2007. They were not married yet when Chris was sentenced to six weeks in jail on charges of drunk driving and other traffic offences. With the media unable to get to Christopher, all eyes turned to Fann.

“[When he went to jail], I only remember telling him that he had to resolve the issue at hand, and that he needn’t care about anything else,” the 49-year-old star said. “I buried myself in work and just kept working non-stop. I didn’t find it tough, and I think he suffered more than I did. He told me just go to work and not to visit him.”

Her every move was watched by the public and the media, and Fann struggled to stay strong. At times, she would wonder if he was eating and sleeping well, and if he would be able to overcome the uncertainties that would lie ahead after he was released from prison.

At other times, she would completely forget what had happened. “There was once I wanted to call him after work, because that’s something that I’m very used to doing. It was only after I picked up the phone and dialled his number did I remember that he was [in jail] and that I couldn’t call him.”

Fann also talked about her life’s biggest regret. In February 2009, months before the pair were to get married, Chris’ father passed away. The actor rushed back to his hometown of Malacca for the wake and funeral.

Fann, who was filming a drama at the time, had asked for time off to be by Chris’ side but her request was rejected. What followed were nasty headlines of her not showing respect to her future husband’s family, and these reports haunt her to this day.

“The newspapers published a report saying that I was a terrible future daughter-in-law, and that I would have been drowned in the river after being locked in a pig’s cage if this incident happened in the past. They said awful things,” Fann said. “I was very upset and I didn’t understand why they had to say that. If I had gone ahead and taken time off anyway, filming would have been halted and it would have become my fault. I’d be blamed regardless of what I did. The producer later apologised to me because he didn’t know that things would turn out like that, but it was too late. It’s my biggest regret in life.”

At this point of the interview, Fann broke down in tears.

“I’m alright if I have to suffer on my own, but I don’t want to see my family and the people around me suffer too. I regret that I wasn’t able to be with my husband and that I couldn’t see his father for the last time,” she said. “As you grow older, you’ll start to realise how important it is to be with your family. Christopher regrets not being by his father’s side in his final moments, and my regret is not being able to be by his side. I just wanted a few hours to be with him, but I couldn’t have that.”
