Fann Wong Feels “Very Fortunate” That She Could Be Compared To Zoe Tay When She Debuted

Many years ago, Fann Wong said something in an interview that remains an unforgettable quote about her relationship with Zoe Tay to this day: “We are just colleagues, not friends.”

Those who closely followed local entertainment news in the ‘90s and noughties might remember that ever since Fann made her drama debut in 1994’s Dreams Come True, there were endless comparisons between the actresses in the media.

While she now feels “very fortunate” that she could be considered a ‘rival’ to Zoe, who was already an established star by the time Fann entered showbiz, the 50-year-old admitted on Mediacorp talk show The Inner Circle that it stressed her out then.

“Zoe was already an Ah Jie when I debuted, so to be able to be compared with her was a good thing,” she mused. “At least, that’s how I look at it now, but it gave me a lot of pressure back then ‘cos as soon as I joined showbiz, they said I was the next Ah Jie so I should be more like her.”
