The OG of all Taiwanese-style castella cake shops has landed in Singapore. Original Cake opened its first outlet in Taipei in 2011 — before other brands like Le Castella. It has three other outlets in Taiwan and eight branches in Malaysia. Now, it has opened its Singapore shop in Westgate, Jurong. The takeaway-only outlet is jointly set up by a group of Malaysians and the brand’s Taiwanese founders. The towering, pillowy cakes are baked fresh in-store daily and come in three flavours: Original ($11.50), Golden Cheese ($13.50) and Frozen Chocolate ($16.50), studded with Hershey’s dark chocolate chips. The last time we tried it at its JB branch, the latter chilled sponge was our favourite for its rich, fudgy consistency.
While there are no limits on the number of cakes each customer can buy for now, you can expect queues of about an hour for these jiggly creations (the brand’s original Tamsui Old Street in Taipei has queues of up to three hours!). The bakes will be sold at a promotional price of $10, $12 and $15 respectively for a start.
What's even sweeter: the shop will give away 800 free original flavour cakes from 10.30am on its opening day, so get ready to jostle.
Opens 23 Sept (Sat). #02-24 Westgate, 3 Gateway Drive, S608532. Tel: 9688-7012. Open daily 10am-10pm. Last orders at closing. www.facebook.com/originalcakesingapore
