Say hello to the newest Star Search champion. After three hours of performances and challenges at the Theatre at Mediacorp, Teoh Zetong was crowned the winner of this year’s competition, with Herman Keh and Ye Jiayun in the first runner-up and second runner-up positions respectively.

During a post-show press conference, all of them admitted that they did not expect to end up getting into the Top 3. “I never imagined I would win,” said 26-year-old Zetong, who will be quitting his job at Carousell to join Mediacorp. “I think everyone did a really good job.”

In addition to the Mediacorp contract, Zetong is also the proud new owner of shiny red Audi Q2 (which he said he will take for a spin with the other Top 24 contestant to celebrate). The runners-up were offered contracts as well, with 25-year-old Herman bringing home S$5,000 worth of Poh Heng jewellery and S$7,000 worth of Bonia products, and 17-year-old Jiayun winning S$3,000 worth of Bonia prizes.

DJ Vanessa Ho, 20, was conferred the Samsung Galaxy Breakthrough Award, earning her a cool S$10,000 in cash and a free trip to Seoul, South Korea.

Some of those who caught the live programme may be a tad surprised at the result. After all, Juin Teh and Chang Hio Cheng were arguably two of the strongest performers during the acting segment, where the finalists re-enacted scenes from classic Channel 8 dramas A Song to Remember, The Guest People, and My Lucky Charm.

Both contestants nailed their emotional scenes, complete with real tears and expertly delivered expressions. Last Madame actress Kiki Lim also deserves a special mention for not being afraid to get “ugly” for her role as an unkempt, tomboyish gambler.

However, it appears just stellar acting wasn’t enough to impress the panel of judges - which included Hong Kong superstars Carina Lau, Simon Yam, and Stephen Fung - despite it comprising a whopping 50 per cent of the total judging criteria. Other areas to score points in were the execution of a dance item (10 per cent), charm and charisma (20 percent), and eloquence (20 per cent).

The hopefuls got to demonstrate the latter when they were put on the spot and given various showbiz-related situations to respond to in just 25 seconds, such as “what would you do if your co-star kept showering you with saliva?” (Herman’s over-the-top depiction of a spitting war certainly incited chuckles from the audience).

Congrats to Zetong, Herman, and Jiayun, and a pat on the back for the rest of the Top 24 as well! After all, they did beat out around 1,200 other contenders to get to this point, which is a pretty awesome achievement in itself.
