After last night (April 19), 2015 will henceforth be known as the year Jeanette Aw owned the Star Awards Show 1 with a staggering total of six wins.
It all started with the Social Media Award, which Jeanette confessed she did not imagine she’d win again for the second year running (a claim that is backed up by the genuinely surprised reaction on her face when the winner was announced). “Perhaps a lot of people are interested in the things I post, and my Facebook page recently surpassed one million followers,” ventured the well-loved actress as to why she triumphed.
The next wave of accolades, the Most Popular Regional Artiste Awards, washed over like a tsunami when she was named as the victor for Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia (Christopher Lee won for China). Again, Jeanette expressed her astonishment at being crowned thrice.
“I was prepared to get off the stage after receiving one trophy – I didn’t think I would bag it all!” she exclaimed with a chuckle. “I only thought I would win for Cambodia as I’ve been there quite a few times and felt their support, but I have not travelled to the others on a personal capacity so it’s something I really did not expect. I’m very touched and want to thank all the fans who sent their love from their countries.”

Jeanette’s winning streak blazed on when she was named Favourite Female Character and Favourite Onscreen Character ( with Zhang Zhen Huan), but her acceptance speech contained a bittersweet announcement of her intention to withdraw from future voting categories. “Let this be the last one, okay?” she appealed on stage.
When asked to elaborate on her decision, Jeanette revealed that when she was lagging behind in the Favourite Female Character polls over the past few weeks, she would receive e-mails from supporters saying they wanted to end their lives, which worried her tremendously.
“Fans would usually tell me how upset they would be if I did not win, but I got a red alert this year when a couple of them expressed suicidal thoughts,” she shared. “I don’t want these awards to be the reason anything happens to (my fans); I just wish for them to enjoy my work and not worry about whether I win or lose, because that does not matter.”
“So while I treasure their support and all the awards they’ve given me, I do not want to take part in any future voting categories. I hope this personal wish of mine will be communicated to the company and that everyone supports my decision. I don’t want my fans to feel stressed every year, and at the same time, I can give newer artistes a chance. I’ve already been given a perfect report card today! (laughs)”

During our quick catch-up with other hot favourite Rui En, who walked home empty-handed, she commented that she “wouldn’t consider” suicidal devotees as fans of hers, but Jeanette has a completely different viewpoint.
“I am not angry at them because it shows their love for me, and I cannot deny that kind of support from them,” she said. “It’s just that they tend to blame themselves if they feel they have not voted hard enough, and I am concerned for fans like that.”
At least now, Jeanette can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that these overly-emotional admirers will be fine thanks to her trophy-collecting spree. In fact, they have even more cause for celebration as she is set to be inducted into the All-Time Favourite Artistes hall of fame at Show 2 next Sunday (April 26).
So what celebration plans are in order? “I haven’t thought about it yet,” she admitted. “I always meet my fans outside after the ceremony, but tonight I’m just going to go home to have a good rest!”
