Hello Niu Year, and it’s back to the daily grind for all of us. Love it or hate it, many of us are still working from home. The upside: No morning traffic madness and working in our comfiest clothes. The downside: Longer hours spent in front of the computer and phone screens that sadly, result in puffy and tired eyes.
Eye fatigue can also be felt in the form of dry, watery or itchy eyes and even blurred vision and headaches. So why do these happen, especially after a long day in front of your computer with lots of screen time exposure?
Reason #1: You blink less when you're looking at the screen.
On average, we blink about 18 times a minute. But when we’re staring at our screens, we blink about half as often, which results in tired, dry eyes and blurred vision. Blinking naturally refreshes our eyes as it stimulates tear production to moisten the eye and reduce dryness while washing away any debris at the same time.
Reason #2: You’re working your eyes harder.
From having to focus and refocus each time you toggle between the screen and a physical document to poor lighting and the glare from the screen, our eyes have to work extra hard to compensate for all this.
REVIEW: So this is what happened when we tried the MegRhythm Steam Eye Masks Oriental Herb Series
The struggle is real. Fortunately, there is an easy way to soothe your tired eyes. MegRhythm, the brand behind those oh-so-soothing Steam Eye Masks, is launching a limited edition Oriental Herb series. The range is inspired by the healing benefits of oriental herbs, Mugwort Scent and Tangerine Peel Scent (chen pi), and promises to relieve and refresh tired eyes, which is exactly what we need after a very long day in front of the laptop.
Packaging-wise, the new Oriental Herb series looks exactly like the regular MegRhythm Steam Eye Mask packs, except for a change in colour – green for Mugwort and orange for Tangerine Peel, naturally. We’ve used these Steam Eye Masks before, and our fave part is how they are able to deliver a comfortable heat of up to 40 degrees Celsius thanks to its heat generating pad that produces heat upon contact with the oxygen in the air, which instantly relieves eye fatigue. But still, we were curious to find out how the Oriental Herb series was different.
On Monday night, we picked the Mugwort Scent because this herb has calming and soothing properties, and our eyes were feeling particularly tired after a very long day in front of the laptop (14 hours to be precise). The scent was unlike what we thought it would be. The green hue on the packaging and the name itself made us think it would be somewhat herbaceous. But surprisingly, it was pleasant, floral and very soothing. Almost immediately after we placed the mask over our eyes, we could feel that comforting and familiar heat, and the strain and stress of the day slipping away. In fact, it was so relaxing that we drifted off to sleep with the mask on, and only jolted awake some time later.
On Thursday, our eyes were feeling extremely dry and we were having trouble concentrating on the words on the screen mid-way through the work day. So we decided to take a break — it was the perfect excuse to try the Steam Eye Mask in Tangerine Peel Scent. Touted to have a refreshing and comforting effect, it was a great 20 minutes that left not only our eye area feeling invigorated, but our senses too. Plus, the mild steam from the heat even helps to moisten the eye area, which was great as we had an evening video call with a client.
Like its other MegRhythm Steam Eye Mask variants, the Oriental Herb series masks boasts a material that is very comfortable when worn, and doesn’t irritate the delicate eye area. The ear hooks also prevent any slipping, whether you’re wearing the mask lying down or sitting up, which is perfect for even midday eye breaks while at your desk.
3 Ways To Relieve Tired Eyes
The next time your eyes are feeling strained and fatigued, here’s what you can do:
#1: Remember to rest your eyes while you work.
Follow the 20-20 rule — Look at a faraway object for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes. If you can’t remember to do so, you can even set an alert on your phone to remind you.
#2: Remind yourself to blink.
Write the word “blink” on a post-it and place it on your screen to remind yourself. And each time you see the note, blink.
#3: Soothe tired eyes with MegRhythm Steam Eye Mask.
Besides the limited edition Oriental Herbs series, there are other very nice options: Unscented, Lavender, Chamomile, Rose and Yuzu.
$6.50 for box of five masks. Available at Watsons, Guardian, Don Don Donki, Welcia-BHG, Tokyu Hands, Nishino, Meidiya, NTUC FairPrice and official Kao store on Shopee.
