It’s been three years since tourists were able to see cherry blossoms in their full blooming glory for themselves in Japan, so you bet sakura season this spring is going to be a popular affair.

Need help to plan that sakura-spotting sojourn? You’re in luck. The Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) has released a forecast for sakura season this year, and has predicted when they start flowering up to when peak blooming happens in various cities in Japan.

Sakura are forecasted to bloom earliest in Tokyo, with a projected flowering date on Mar 21 and a full bloom date on Mar 29. In Kyoto, the trees are expected to flower from Mar 27 and fully peak on Apr 4. Similarly in Osaka, cherry blossoms are forecasted to flower from Mar 28, with a predicted full bloom date on Apr 4.

Sakura season will arrive later in Hokkaido, with a forecasted flowering date of Apr 29, while full blooms are expected on May 2.

The forecasts are based on the popular Yoshino Cherry trees in about 1,000 cherry blossom viewing locations throughout Japan.

JMC will be updating its forecasts regularly, and weekly updates will start from mid-February, so be sure to check back before your trip.
