A day trip in Japan you should take

Headed to Tokyo? Why not duck to the charming Takasaki — only an hour away by train — for a day or two for a quaint, quiet, quintessential Japanese adventure?

A day trip in Japan you should take

Only those in the know would’ve heard of Takasaki, once known as a hub for factories owned by international corporations (the pint of Haagen Dazs in your freezer was made here). But Takasaki, which boasts a charming small-town vibe (its tallest building is the 21-storey City Hall), is now becoming an open secret for travellers seeking a quick day trip to wind down from Tokyo’s frenetic buzz, but want to skip the over-Instagrammed Kyoto or Nara. After all, Takasaki, which is two-thirds the size of Singapore, is close enough to Tokyo that some of its 371,000 residents don’t mind commuting an hour daily to and fro for work (think of it as living in Jurong and working in Changi). We hop on the shinkansen to the delightfully pristine locale largely untouched by the ravages of tourism.
