Reel life: Pulau Samsara
The private island where Araminta’s (Sonoya Mizuno) bachelorette party took place.

Real life: Four Seasons Langkawi Resort
It’s no private island, but a getaway at the Four Seasons luxury resort in Langkawi, is just as luxe. This serene sanctuary takes heritage luxe to another level with its garden-view or sea-view pavilion suites and villas.

Idyllic holidays are made of these.
Kick off your day with a dip in your private plunge pool or me-time at the spa. The resort is nestled within the magnificent UNESCO Geopark, so pencil in some time with Mother Nature to explore the mangrove forests and rivers.

Isle be there for you
If you’re lucky, you may even come across another CRA location on your Langkawi adventures. Remember when Colin (Chris Pang) and Nick (Henry Golding) escaped the cargo ship bachelor party for a tranquil time at Rawa Island? Turns out it wasn’t actually filmed at the coral island off Mersing, but in Langkawi, “around some bends in Langkawi where all of these rocks just jut out of the water,” said director Jon M Chu.

Reel life: Tyersall Park
Ah Ma’s (Lisa Lu) over-the-top, sprawling mansion oozing old-world Peranakan charm, and is so secluded that it can’t be found on the GPS.

Lawn and order
The lavish abode is also where the glitzy tan hua blooming party — or according to Nick (Henry Golding), a dinner with grandma at his childhood home — is held at.

Real life: Carcosa Seri Negara in Kuala Lumpur
The 40-acre Carcosa Seri Negara is tucked away in the lush hills of the Perdana Botanical Gardens in KL. The grandiose colonial building has been conserved as a heritage site that, these days, is good for history tours, exhibitions and events. Oozing an old-world charm, it comprises two mansions that date back to 1904 when it was home to the first British High Commissioner to Malaysia and his successors. Carcosa Seri Negara was revived later as a luxurious hotel in the 1980s, where it boasts Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip among its famous occupants. Hotel operations ceased in the early noughties.
Go here: For a history lesson and an OOTD, or 10. But if you’re thinking about getting a snap at the lake in front of the mansion, sorry to disappoint, but that was digitally superimposed in the movie.

Reel life: Shanghai
Astrid Leong (Gemma Chan) is in Shanghai and makes her grand entrance in CRA gliding through a decidedly chi-chi crowd, and is led into a private jewellery vault where she buys a $1.2mil pair of blindingly sparkly earrings on a whim, the same way you and I buy movie tickets.

Real life: Astor Bar in St Regis Kuala Lumpur
A cocktail aficionado’s dream come true. If you love the opulence of The Great Gatsby, you’ll feel right at home at the swish Astor Bar. It’s the place to see and be seen sipping daintily on one of the innovative cocktails (Professor G&T, anyone?) whipped up by some of the best bartenders in the country.

Astrid-lutely pretty
Can’t afford jewels the price of a condominium like Astrid? You still can live it up like a crazy rich Asian…sorta. To commemorate its role in the film, the Astor Bar has created a drink called The Astrid, a pretty pink concoction of Jose Cuervo silver tequila, pomegranate juice, lemon bitters and elderflower foam.

Reel life: Mahjong den
Who could ever forget that standout mahjong showdown between Rachel (Constance Wu) and Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh)?

Real life: Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in Penang
The iconic Blue Mansion, as it’s more popularly known, has been a tourist fave in Penang among heritage hunters and Instagram fiends. And it's not difficult to see why.

Court(yard) in session
Amid the great eats and Instagrammable spots in Penang, this exquisite 20th century boutique hotel, which has been bestowed a UNESCO Conservation and Heritage award, stands out for its old-world charm evident in its 18 rooms, fine Penang fusion nosh at Indigo Restaurant, and uber-’grammable nooks.
