Channel Your Inner Tom Cruise To Walk On This Glass Floor 310m Above The Ground
Bangkok’s Mahanakhon Skywalk offers a view of the city not for the faint-hearted.
In Bangkok, there is no shortage of rooftop viewpoints. Off the, er, top of our head, there’s the Sky Bar at Lebua State Tower (you know, the one featured in The Hangover Part II). And there’s the Moon Bar over at Banyan Tree Hotel. But if you only have time for one rooftop visit, we suggest you hit the Big Kahuna of rooftop vantage points — the Mahanakhon Skywalk.
The skywalk is at the top of King Power Mahanakhon in the Silom/Sathorn financial district. At 314m — that’s taller than Tanjong Pagar Centre, Singapore’s tallest building — the 78-story mixed-use megastructure has this pixelated façade which from afar looks like a partially downloaded picture. Either that or Godzilla had taken a bite out of it. It’s an awe-inspiring tower that belongs in The Fifth Element. (It made a cameo in the opening credits of Justice League; cue to 5:12.)
When it opened in Dec 2016, the Mahanakhon (which means 'great metropolis' in Thai) was the country’s tallest building before it was dethroned two years later by the 317m-tall Iconsiam. But the Mahanakhon, owned by duty-free shopping chain King Power, has something the Iconsiam doesn’t — a 63 sq m glass tray floor sticking out from the edge of the roof, 310m above the ground.
In January, 8 DAYS was invited to check out the place. If you’re planning a quick getaway with the kids during the school holidays, why not make a pit stop at the Mahanakhon Skywalk and find out if you are Tom Cruise enough to handle the dizzying heights. Here’s what to expect when you’re there…
