Changi Airport Wins Best Airport In The World Title; Results Announced In An Online Awards Ceremony

The global coronavirus outbreak may have taken a huge toll on the travel and aviation industry, but the show must go on when it comes to recognising the world’s best airports.

And for the eighth year running, Changi Airport has bagged top honours at the World Airport Awards 2020, held by Skytrax.

This marks the 11th time that Changi Airport has snagged the no. 1 position in the awards 21-year history. This year is the first year that travellers surveyed could factor in Jewel Changi Airport into their assessment. The awards are voted by airport customers in a global customer satisfaction survey. Travellers had to rate airports at different points such as check-ins, arrivals, departures, transfers and shopping.

The annual ceremony was held online on YouTube for the first time yesterday (May 11). It was originally slated to take place in April in Paris but was cancelled due to the global pandemic.

Tokyo’s Haneda Airport came in second, while Doha’s Hamad International Airport climbed up one spot to third place. Schipol Airport in Amsterdam managed to edge its way into the top 10 rankings this year, having jumped from 14th last year to 9th this year. Meanwhile, London’s Heathrow Airport, which came in number 8 in 2019, dropped out of the top 10 to place 12th.

“Changi Airport is humbled to receive this affirmation from our travellers, made possible by the strong support from our airport partners,” said Changi Airport Group CEO, Lee Seow Hiang, in a video statement during the online awards ceremony.

“This has been a challenging year for all of us. Like everyone else, here at Changi, we continue to do our best to safeguard and protect the health of our travellers, our visitors and our airport workers. We wish everyone in the international aviation community well. Let’s look forward to better times and soon.”
