3 New Buzzwords That Are About To Change The Way You Travel

Fancy travelling in mobitecture on your buddymoon? Or just for bleisure?

‘Wanderlust’ is so 2015. Learning all this new lingo is your first step to taking the road less travelled

#1: Mobitecture
Nah, not the caravan. Innovations in mobile architecture now run the gamut from mobile saunas to convertible clothing, all to allow for adventures anywhere in the world — without the baggage. Not for the faint-hearted or anyone whose idea of camping is a weekend chalet at East Coast Park.
What to get: How about a jacket that converts into a tent (main pic)? The waterproof ADIFF jacket (US$350), made out of recycled water bottles, can fit up to two people when it’s fully opened. Doubles up as an Obi-wan Kenobi costume. Pre-order at www.adiff.com.

#2: Buddymoon
It’s when your friends join you on your honeymoon. We were first introduced to the idea in 2015 after Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux got hitched, then whisked friends like Courteney Cox and Jason Bateman off to Bora Bora for a beachy buddymoon. Now the trend of turning your romantic getaway into a big friendly vacay is catching on among plebs. With destination weddings on the rise, it’s only logical for the newlyweds to spend time with their pals who’ve come all this way for their nuptials. And what better way to do it than on a vacay with the whole crew.

Where to go: Check into one of the family suites (main pic) at the idyllic AMARI HUA HIN resort (a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Bangkok) that’s perf for big groups. Even better: the Kids’ Club for guests to, er, deposit the lil’ tykes ensures that your mates with kids get a breather too. Prices start at 6,962 baht (S$286) per night, inclusive of 500 baht F&B credits. Go to https://www.amari.com/huahin.

#3: Bleisure
Tacking on a few days of vacation at the end of a business trip may not be a new concept. What’s new, though, is this dubious portmanteau. Bleisure was popularised by Airbnb, after findings from its study revealed that more folks who travel for work are mixing business with leisure, and are booking longer stays on Airbnb — 6.8 days, twice as long as the usual business stay in a hotel.
What to do: Companies have to be enrolled in Airbnb’s Business Travel programme before employees can filter search results for accommodation for corporate travel. These listings typically have 24-hour check-ins, round-the-clock support, and are laptop-ready. Plus, expenses can be charged direct to the company. No word if the boss will pay for those extra days off, though. Go to https://www.airbnb.com.sg/business-travel for more info.
