You know how some people and brands are just so innately and effortlessly hip and desirable, everything that touches them becomes cool by association? Three well-loved make-up brands have tapped on three bastions of cool to bring you three collaboration collections that you’ll want to run to the stores to buy — like right now.
NARS x Charlotte Gainsbourg: A super-cool ode to fresh, no-make-up make-up
NARS is cool. Charlotte Gainsbourg is cool. Scratch that; Charlotte Gainsbourg — actress, singer and French muse (her mum is Jane Birkin, who inspired the bag) — is trés cool. And her brand of cool, though natural and effortless, with that je ne sais quoi, is also unorthodox and eclectic (just Google her filmography — eg. Lars von Trier’s Nymphomanic). She’s known for not wearing much make-up (her look is smoldering eyes and not much else), which makes her collab with NARS all the more surprising and awesome — expect tinted gel-creams instead of heavy foundations, hints of fresh hues instead of in-your-face colours. The packaging is a revelation — military khaki with gold accents, unusually masculine for make-up. We love it. The Hydrating Glow Tint ($55) is perfect for that no-make-up look, the Multiple Tint ($60) is great for just-bitten lips and flushed cheeks and the Kohliner ($40) is soft and sexy. Unexpected and oh-so-cool.

Urban Decay x Jean-Michel Basquiat: Raw, rebellious cool that turns make-up into an arty experience
Urban Decay is cool. Ruby Rose is cool. Jean-Michel Basquiat: An art world cult icon, and the master of using graffiti art, intense colours and raw textures to create non-conformist works that challenge the status quo. In other words: Cool AF. When the three come together: Boom. You get images like these. Even before her first shoot for UD, Ruby Rose was already a huge JM Basquiat fan — she has a tattoo of his face on her arm and his iconic crown image on her chest. For the campaign pics, she went for dirty-arty-cool. We dig it. As for the products, we feel cooler just looking at them: Two eyeshadow palettes, Tenant ($62) and Gold Griot ($62) inspired by Basquiat colours; lipsticks in cool tones ($29), and art-bright eyeliners ($32) in packaging that has to be seen to be believed. The palettes come wrapped in canvas, with a cutout at the back so you can hang up your Basquiat ‘art’ and create a mini make-up art gallery at home.

Shu Uemura x Ambush: Golden-hued street cool with hip-hop bling-inspired overtones
Shu Uemura is cool. Ambush is too-cool-for-school. Together, they’ve made a golden baby. This collab lends street cred to the timeless Japanese skincare and make-up brand with the illustrious history, while giving mainstream legitimacy to the vaunted Tokyo jewellery label known for their edgy street aesthetic. Bottles of Shu’s beloved cleansing oil ($55 to $165) are dressed in gold foil, while lipsticks and compacts are similarly gilded. The metallic Eye Foil in a limited edition shiny blue hue called Amb Dreamcatches ($48) is edgy and on-trend. The overall message: Stay golden.
