It’s not all doom and gloom for fitness buffs, despite the fact that many indoor gyms and fitness studios will have to shut from May 8 to 30 as part of new tighter Covid-19 measures announced on May 4. As it turns out, there are some fitness classes that will continue — either because some indoor studios are taking their high intensity classes outdoors. Or, due to a rule change on May 7, some indoor gyms that offer low intensity workouts will be allowed to remain in operation during this time.

Yes, low intensity workouts are allowed in public and private gyms, according to a Sport Singapore (SportSG) update on May 7. These include yoga, Pilates, stretching exercises and tai chi. Martial arts and combat sports academies can also continue holding classes. However, activities have to be modified according to the tightened safety measures. Contact must be minimised as much as possible, and gyms cannot provide the use of common equipment like punching pads and boxing rings.

Needless to say, tightened safe management measures are in place for all physical activities that have been permitted to continue from May 8 to 30. These include wearing of masks by all participants, including instructors, at all times during indoor classes. There is also no sharing of equipment allowed as well.

Of course, working out at these places during what’s essentially Phase 2 v2.0 is going to be different from what we’ve become used to the past few months in Phase 3.

Here’s a look at some of the fitness classes in Singapore can you still attend until May 30, and what measures you should take note of:

#1: Yoga Movement

Yoga Movement’s six branches islandwide will reopen May 13 with new safe management rules in place for some 460 classes it’ll hold per week. Under refreshed guidelines, it’s essential to bring your own mat and towels to class and have your mask on during practice (class intensity will be modified for this purpose). #2: Yoga Lab and Barre Lab

All four yoga and barre studios under Lab Studios have resumed. The studios have also implemented stricter measures across the board. Besides mandatory ones such as having masks on at all times during the sesh, reduced capacities, and BYO towels, mats and props, barre classes will be modified so that sequences will not require participants to touch the barre. Attendees will also need to step outside the practice area to drink water, and shower facilities are not available at this time. Prices start at $30 per class. More info at

#3: Breathe Pilates

In-studio classes resume at the boutique Pilates studio’s four locations — Novena Medical Centre, Parkway Centre, Galaxis and 6 Raffles Quay — from May 10. Only mat, not reformer, classes will be available for now. Group mat classes prices start at $55, while private classes start at $78 per sesh. And, of course, it’s BYO mat and towel. More info at

#4: Yoga+

Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar studios will reopen May 12, with class timings more spaced out. Classes will be modified to better suit the mask-on policy. Participants must bring their own yoga mat or mat towel to be laid over their studio’s yoga mats. On top of that, Yoga+ has launched outdoor classes at The Lawn @ Marina Bay, Fort Canning Park and Botanic Gardens. From $30 per class on, or reserve on Classpass.

#5: Aurora

The brand new spin studio’s official launch was scheduled for May 8, but as fate would have it, well, we all know what happened. So rather than kicking things off in its second-floor premises in South Beach Quarter, Aurora has moved classes to the open-air space in the building instead. Five to six classes will be held daily from 7am (9am on weekends), with evening classes, coupled with disco lights, make for the closest substitute to the indoor cycling experience. #6: Revolution

Out of its three spin studios, only Revolution’s Tanjong Pagar outpost at Frasers Tower remains open during this time (the Cecil Street and Orchard studios remain closed). And for good reason — classes will be held at an outdoor space within the building. There’s also a strict protocol for riders attending outdoor rides at Frasers Tower: participants will have to check in and collect shoes from the studio at Level 2, then wait outside the studio for staff to bring them up to Level 4 in groups of five. #7: Spartans Boxing Club

All 10 boxing gyms under the Spartans franchise can stay open, but classes will look a little different. Clubs will offer a mix of indoor and outdoor sessions. Because of the tighter restrictions applicable to indoor classes, these will feature lower intensity workouts that focus on technique and foundation skills. Higher intensity workouts will be taken outdoors. Classes are kept strictly to five per group, and weights and gym equipment will not be available for use. #8: True Group

The True Group comprising TFX, True Fitness (with True Yoga as a sub-brand), GFX and Yoga Edition, is holding 120 outdoor editions of the most popular gym classes at various outdoor spaces located at True Fitness Harbourfront, TFX Millenia Walk, ESR BizPark @ Chai Chee, Great World City, Velocity @ Novena and Funan Mall. Spin classes and indoor cardio and strength training will be on hold at this hip boutique gym. Instead, yoga and conditioning classes will take place at the Robinson Road gym’s cool outdoor pool deck during this period. #10: Level

HIIT sessions at Fort Canning, calisthenics classes at The Lawn @ Marina Bay or interval weight training at the courtyard outside Level’s Telok Ayer outlet (its other branch is at Robinson Road)? This is just a sampling of the outdoor classes to expect now that Level’s in-studio classes are on hold, and all classes will take place at one of the three outdoor locations instead.
