The 35-year-old magic maven recently re-emerged from retirement after three years.
Recounting her 15-year magic career thus far: “I’ve had a very good run with Magic Babe but I’ve sustained a series of injuries, and I wanted to do something with more longevity. As Magic Babe Ning, I’ve already done all these stunts [such as escaping from a water tank suspended from 75 feet above ground at the 2013 Night Fest], and put my body through a lot. As it turns out, hiding in small boxes isn’t good for you.”
So what’s the difference between a Magic Babe and a Mind Magic Mistress then? The latter dabbles in mentalism, it seems. “Magic is about a visual display of wonders, like making a rabbit magically appear from an empty box. With mentalism, there’s a human connection, subliminal conditioning and some neuro-linguistic programming and hypnotism involved. It’s more cerebral,” she explains.
She gives us a crash course in a party trick that you can use to impress anyone.
Step 1
Take note of the card at the bottom of the deck. In this case, it’s the Queen of Hearts.
Step 2
Spread the cards out face down, and invite a friend to pick out a card at random. To make it more interesting for the audience, Ning suggests: “You can even have them shuffle the cards, so that they know it’s not a trick deck. As they pass the cards back to you, it’s the same drill.”
Step 3
Ask your friend to show everyone but you the card they’ve selected.
Step 4
Square up the cards. The Queen of Hearts is still at the bottom of the deck. Get your friend to place the card they’ve picked at the top of the pile.
Step 5
Cut the cards and bring the bottom half of the cards to the top of the pile, so that the Queen of Hearts is placed right above the card that your friend has just put at the top of the pile.
Step 6
Spread the cards again and look for the Queen of Hearts. Here’s a suggestion from Ning to add some pizzazz to your performance. ““As you’re guessing the card they’ve picked in Step 6, you could say something like, ‘Oh, I’m going to read your mind’,” she says. The card that was picked out earlier should be the one right next to it. Ta-dah, King of Diamonds! To perfect the trick, there’s only one thing to do. Practice, practice, practice. “There’s no sleight of hand involved in this trick so I consider this fool-proof. But with magic, you really, really need to rehearse. It’s unlike music, where if you forget some lyrics, it’s fine,” says Ning.
