Huat Or Not: What Local Stars Wore For Chinese New Year
They wore huat?!? Celeb style hits and misses this CNY.

Despite a much quieter Chinese New Year, the celebs didn't hold back on dressing up this festive season. From amusing and ox-picious getups (cue Hong Ling and Nick Teo) to the traditional (Shaun Chen and Tay Ying) and stylish (Andrea De Cruz and Pierre Png, as well as Diana Ser and family), here are the looks that caught our eye.

James Lye, Diana Ser, and family
Our best-dressed regular, Diana and her family were all decked in cheery colours for a CNY family photo and boy did they look picture-perfect.
Huat or not?: Five times the huat!

Chua En Lai
Funnyman En Lai isn’t one to shy away from loud prints. And this CNY, he not only donned an ong lai top, but also posed with lion and pineapple balloons.
Huat or not?: Of course huat lah.

Mike Kasem
Gold 905 DJ Mike and his family went matchy-matchy for CNY. Zoom in and you’ll see that their outfits feature ox prints. How adorable!
Huat or not?: Huat and very ox-picious

Andrea De Cruz and Pierre Png
Also in matchy OOTDs were Pierre and Andrea in threads from local label Our Second Nature. Love the big and colourful blooms on Andrea’s frock, which signify a beautiful start to the new year.
Huat or not?: Huat, and the blooms are just too pretty.

Germaine Tan
Although she’s wearing the TikTok famous strawberry dress that’s supposedly themed around escapism (remember how horrible 2020 was?), when we saw Germaine’s OOTD, all we could think of was Strawberry Shortcake. All she’s missing is a matching poofy hat to complete the look.
Huat or not?: Not very huat. She looked more like she was going to host a children's programme.

Fann Wong, Zed and Christopher Lee
Zed's zoned out expression aside (stayed up late on New Year’s eve, perhaps?), the Lees looked festive in their red and nude pink outfits when they wished their followers a happy Chinese New Year.
Huat or not?: Huat! The lion dance prop definitely added extra festive cheer.

Hong Ling and Nick Teo
We love how ox-picious and punny Nick and Hong Ling's sweaters, which are a play on the Chinese idiom of lao niu chi nen cao (it literally means "old cow eating tender grass" or robbing the cradle) are.
Huat or not?: Huat because it made us LOL.

Bonnie Loo
White on CNY? Yikes. We can already imagine the elderly relatives shaking their heads in disapproval. Wish she donned a pair of red earrings or crossbody to add a touch of huatness to her fairy-like ensemble.
Huat or not?: Not

Bryan Wong
The geometric print on Bryan’s cardigan brings to mind two things: mahjong tiles and an Empress' cloak.
Huat or not?: Not. It’ll look more appealing on his A Quest To Heal character, eunuch Sun Xi.

Allan Wu
Hunkle Allan went for a simple yet very niu year appropriate gold ox print tee that hugged his super fit bod like a glove.
Huat or not?: Huat! And seeing how good he looks, we’re feeling inspired to get active too.

Ferlyn Wong
A traditional hanbok never fails to look elegant and we’re loving the standout colours on Ferlyn’s version above. It's not very Singapore weather-friendly, but if you can tahan the heat, why not give it a go.
Huat or not?: Huat… but be prepared to sweat buckets.

Shaun Chen
Was Shaun inspired by a feng shui or kung fu master because he sure dressed like one. Nonetheless, we'll give him a thumbs up for looking swoon-worthy in this huat red oriental getup, emblazoned with the character the character "fu" (fortune in Chinese), no less.
Huat or not?: Huat. Now show us some moves.

Elvin Ng
Elvin spent his CNY in pyjamas (and in the loo) as he was down with food poisoning and didn't "make the #privilegedlist of #8 for any household". Still, he could have at least donned new PJs?
Huat or not?: Not

Janice Koh
Janice’s double floral combo, set against blue and black backgrounds, creates a modern and romantic two-piece that’s fit for the CNY celebrations. In case you're wondering, they are from Ong Shunmugam.
Huat or not?: Huat and very chic

JJ Lin
The face paintings on JJ’s sweater might be a tad too avant-garde for most uncles and aunties to appreciate, but we love how quirky they are. Spot the hand sanitiser on the side? It's a nice reminder to everyone to stay safe and clean when visiting.
Huat or not?: Definitely huat!

Zoe Tay
Ah Jie went for a red jumpsuit to welcome the new Lunar New Year, looking super vibrant and youthful. Plus, the colour clashing bag added bonus points to her ox-picious look.
Huat or not?: Huat

He Ying Ying
A printed frilly dress is a sure win way of looking sweet during all the CNY visiting. To make Ying Ying’s look more glam and huat-worthy, add a gold clutch or dumpling bag.
Huat or not?: Huat. Plus, it's a great look for Valentine’s Day too.

Stefanie Sun
The pool of red outfits during the festive period can be a tad overwhelming which is why Stefanie’s purple and blue outfit, complete with abstract floral prints, is a stylish alternative. It looks fresh, colourful and eye-catching yet not OTT.
Huat or not?: Huat in a fashion forward way.

Tay Ying
With her glamorous figure-hugging Shanghai Tang cheongsam and retro hairdo, Tay Ying looked like she walked straight out of a ‘30s movie set.
Huat or not?: Huat and very glam!

Sheila Sim
While we love how fab Sheila looked in her red hot number, hubby Deon Woo and their munchkin Layla stole the show with their matching pink outfits and bright smiles.
Huat or not?: Huat

Dawn Yeoh
Okay, so Dawn didn’t go visiting in just her Victoria's Secret loungewear but you can't deny that she looks super hot in her OOTD. And we're not the only ones who think so. Her IG was filled with comments like "Nose bleeding", "This is illegal", and "You cause Evelyn to pull my ears". The last one is courtesy of Darren Lim.
Huat or not?: Huat and hawt

Tong Bing Yu
Bing Yu looks especially festive in her pink mandarin collar shirt dress and golden blonde tresses. Love the traditional meets modern look.
Huat or not?: Huat

You Yi
The beautiful blooms, festive red, and gold accents make You Yi’s frock a failsafe CNY look. One question, though: Why so serious?
Huat or not?: Huat for the dress, not for the RBF.

Kiki Lim
Kiki’s asymmetrical polo dress is a risky style move, especially for visiting because a) it’s so form fitting (i.e. no room for food baby) and b) imagine getting food stains while eating. Nonetheless, the newbie looked fresh and fabulous.
Huat or not?: Huat in a I-didn’t-try-too-hard manner.

Xu Bin
The oriental print on Xu Bin’s hoodie looks extremely apt and auspicious for the Lunar New Year. Just don’t stare too long at it 'cos it might start to resemble a lion dance troupe’s costume.
Huat or not?: Huat

Chen Xiu Huan
Although we’re fans of the classic checks on Xiu Huan’s dress, we’re not exactly sure how comfy it feels to be wearing something so thick in this heat. Melting in a dress like this will not look cool.
Huat or not?: Huat, but just make sure you stay indoors with the AC turned on.

Dick Lee
The explosion of bright and beautiful colours on Dick’s Casablanca-inspired look is unmissable and, of course, very CNY appropriate. Try it if you dare!
Huat or not?: Huatness overload.

Ya Hui
Looking super stylish in a strappy gold and blue tone frock, Ya Hui brought smiles to our faces with her XL mahjong tile prop and goofy poses.
Huat or not?: Huat, thanks to the larger than life huat mahjong tile.

Desmond Ng
A black on black outfit for the CNY weekend? Daring, but hey, at least Desmond’s carrying around a pineapple lantern to make his OOTD a bit more festive.
Huat or not?: Not. Imagine how much nagging he’ll get.

Sora Ma
Sora’s champagne coloured dress not only highlighted her hourglass figure, but also looked elegant when styled with a pair of nude pumps.
Huat or not?: Huat

Chantelle Ng
Did Chantalle make a pact with Elvin to wear PJs for CNY? Her maxi dress might be great for hiding food babies, but it looks a tad too comfy and casual for the celebrations. Plus, the loose silhouette isn’t exactly flattering on photos.
Huat or not?: Not

Bonus: PM Lee Hsien Loong
PM Lee’s red and white shirt, featuring a lion dance print on the side, isn’t just CNY-ready, it’s very patriotic too.
Huat or not?: Showing his love for CNY and the country? Double the huat!
