10 Ways To Slay During Sale Season

It’s every shopaholic’s favourite season of the year. Here are tips on how to spend less, save more and survive the #GSS.

10 Ways To Slay During Sale Season

It's S-A-L-E time! Keep calm and carry on shopping. Here are 10 tips on how to maximise your opportunities at the Great Singapore Sale and come out on top.

#1 Before you start, take stock of your wardrobe.
Before you embark on your GSS spree, one good tip is to take some time to rediscover your wardrobe. Check out what you have and what you don’t. You may unearth long-forgotten pieces that could complement your current wardrobe or outdated pieces that need to be tossed out to make space for new threads. It's also good to take stock of what new things you need and what you shouldn't buy more of.

#2 Separate your needs from your wants.
Always ask yourself whether that new item you are eyeing is a “need” or a “want”. A need is something you can't live without; that piece which will make your life complete. A want is a strong desire to just possess that item. In most cases, people succumb more to wants than needs. A good way to overcome that love-at-first-sight urge is to walk away and think about that item for 15 minutes. That “cooling down” period would help you make a better shopping decision.

#3 Budget, budget, budget.
The repercussion of overspending is no joke. Don't bite off more than you can chew. That new luxury bag may be tempting, but a month of eating bread and living off your office pantry is infinitely more miserable than not having a new Chanel. Set aside an amount that you would be happy spending without feeling the pinch, and when you've hit your limit, stop spending immediately.

#4 Life in plastic, it's fantastic.
Credit cards usually have special cashbacks and rewards during sale periods to encourage spending. A well-planned shopping trip can garner some bonus savings, so check out which credit cards or payment methods will give you a little something extra at particular stores or categories of merchants.

#5 Compare and contrast. Not every good deal is created equal. Online or offline, remember to compare prices across retailers to make sure you are getting the best bargain. Don't take the merchant's word for it — check for yourself. #6 Shop at the right time. Shopping malls and retail stores are the busiest on Friday nights and weekends, as that’s when most consumers shop. If you can, take time out to shop on weekday afternoons or even after work for a more enjoyable and less stressful shopping experience. A pro-tip: As retailers sell out during peak periods, avoid Mondays, as shops normally restock on that day, and you may not be able to find items in your sizes or colours.#7 Ready, get set, click! Every so often, retailers have timed sales or flash sales, where certain items will go on sale for a limited time. Don't blink, and have your finger on the trigger so that when the sale period 'opens', you can add to cart and check out immediately.
#8 It's all about the promo codes. If you're kiasu, have an excel sheet of promo codes ready when you want to shop online at your favourite retailers. As brands prepare for this massive shopping season, keep your eyes peeled for exclusive promo codes from your favourite influencers, bloggers or the retailer’s social media platforms. You may be able to save a decent amount of money or get free shipping. #9 Get on the right platform. And no, we're not talking about Platform 9 and 3/4.While some traditional retailers stick to drawing the crowds into brick and mortar stores, other retailers may offer different discounts on different platforms, such as on their apps. Popular online shopping sites such as

Lazada, Zalora, Shopee and ezBuy offer limited deals or free exchanges and refunds on their mobile apps and websites, which can help you stretch your buck.

#10 Know your sizes.
Shopping online is often hit or miss. To save yourself a lot of hassle and heartache, do a bit of research and homework on the right sizes and measurements for a particular brand. And while you conquer the shopping malls and retail shops, dress in things such as a tank top and shorts, that will allow you to slip that dress, blouse or skirt on easily, so you can skip the crazy changing room queues. Happy shopping!
