Raise your hand if you’ve ever thought of embarking on a budget-friendly, seemingly easy home DIY project that you came across on TikTok. It’s Pinterest-worthy, and it doesn’t come with the high costs and hassle of renovations. No harm, right?

Wrong. A new study by an insurance comparison site shows that there’s up to 39 per cent of TikTok DIY and home décor trends could cause more harm than good to your home, because of poor finish or safety concerns. To put together this list, the company compiled popular DIY TikTok trends from articles online and consulted an industry professional with over 20 years of experience to rank them.

After all, it’s not just about making it look nice for a few seconds on social media. The finished home DIY projects have to be hardy — and safe — enough for you to live with for months, if not years.

Do not try these popular TikTok DIY projects at home:

#1: Using stick-on tiles in areas exposed to heat
For example, in the kitchen. Adhesives may lose effect when it’s heated. However, industry experts say that stick-on tiles in nooks such as bed headboards are okay to try.

#2: Using grout pens
Using a grout pen to change the grout colour on your tiles seems like a quick and easy hack, but the end result often looks cheap.

#3: Cleaning with a drill
This is as dangerous as it is ridiculous, not to mention that things could literally spiral out of control very quickly.

#4: Stenciling flooring
The worst spot to stencil your flooring? In the bathroom. Invest in tried-and-tested non-slip tiles instead.

#5: Painting sinks
The end result may look good for a few seconds on this TikTok but it doesn’t mean you should attempt it. Experts tag this as a terrible DIY project to try as the paint is unlikely to last a long time and you may end up spending more on a new sink.
