Best Nonstick Frying Pans & Skillets To Buy For Fuss-Free Cooking — And Cleaning Up
Explore our curated list of the top nonstick pans on the market, ranging from Teflon-coated wonders to durable ceramic options.

The worst part of cooking is cleaning, of course – unless all the dirt and grime magically slide off in the wash. And this is why nonstick pans are a kitchen essential for many people.
Nonstick pans make cooking easier and cleanup a breeze. But with so many different types of nonstick pans on the market, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. From my recent experience having to shop for one and personal pros and cons lists, I’ll be happy to be your guide in this area.
Pros and Cons of Nonstick Pans
Nonstick pans have a number of advantages over traditional metal pans – but there are some downsides too. Let’s weigh them.
PROS
- Easy to clean: Nonstick pans are easy to clean because food does not stick to them. This can save you time and energy on cleanup.
- Nonstick: Nonstick pans make it easy to cook food without it sticking to the pan. This can help you avoid burning or sticking food, and it can also make it easier to flip or stir food.
- Durable: Nonstick pans are durable and can last for many years with proper care.
CONS
- Can be damaged by metal utensils: Metal utensils can scratch the nonstick coating on a pan, which can make it less effective so stay clear from the metal spatulas.
- More expensive than traditional metal pans: Nonstick pans can be more expensive than traditional metal pans.
- May contain toxic chemicals: Some nonstick pans contain toxic chemicals, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). These chemicals can be released into the air when the pan is heated, and they can be harmful to your health. The best way to reduce your potential health risk is to avoid scratching the pan or heating it above 200°C.
Types of Nonstick Pans & The Best On The Market
Now that we know what we want, here’s a selection of some of the best nonstick pans on the market you can get.
Teflon-coated pans
These are the most common type of nonstick pan. They are made with a coating of Teflon, which is a synthetic polymer that is slippery and resistant to sticking. Teflon-coated pans are easy to clean and maintain, but they can be damaged by metal utensils. Overall, these are pretty affordable too.
Ceramic-coated pans
These pans are made with a coating of ceramic, which is a natural material that is non-stick and non-toxic. Ceramic-coated pans are more durable than Teflon-coated pans, but they can be more expensive. Personally, I went with a ceramic pan eventually and although it's a little bit more pricey, I have no regrets and really enjoy cooking with a ceramic-coated pan.
Cast iron pans
This is a tricky one – it’s undeniable that cast iron pans, especially skillets, look cool and all, and are a staple in the spaces of serious chefs. But there is a level of commitment and dedication needed when you use one.
Cast iron cookware is nonstick when it has been “seasoned”. Seasoning here has nothing to do with spices but refers to creating a hard, protective (and nonstick) coating that's formed by heating thin layers of fat (usually oil) on the cast iron.
As the fat is heated, it bonds to the metal and to itself in a process called polymerisation and this hardened fat converts into a form of plastic. After enough proper seasoning, you end up with a hard and blackened coating that protects the metal.
There are plenty of resources on how to season a pan and as much effort you need to put in, it’s very rewarding. Some fans say that cooking in a cast iron pan gives it a better flavour. On top of that, it is almost indestructible.
How to Choose the Best Nonstick Pan for You
Firstly, have a checklist ready when choosing a nonstick pan. There are a few things you should consider, from budget to shape and size. I went with this criteria – my main need was a durable pan because I cook a lot and would foresee using the pan a lot.
- Type of nonstick coating: There are three main types of nonstick coatings: Teflon, ceramic, and cast iron when seasoned properly. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages.
- Size and shape: Nonstick pans come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Choose a pan that is the right size for your needs.
- Budget: Nonstick pans can range in price from affordable to expensive. Choose a pan that fits your budget.
- Durability: Nonstick pans can be durable or fragile. Choose a pan that is durable and will last for many years.
