When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit Singapore in January, we were told to wear masks only if we were unwell. Well, things are very different now. With a surge in coronavirus cases due to community spread, we're now encouraged to mask up while out in public to better protect yourself and others. There is also increasing evidence that infected people showing no symptoms may infect others.

Since last Sunday (Apr 5), the government has been distributing reusable masks to Singapore households. While the cloth masks are less effective than surgical masks, wearing them could provide some protection. Masks are effective only when worn properly and used in combination with other safety measures such as frequent hand-cleaning, avoiding touching your face, and safe distancing.
