Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Burning Questions About The Post-Credits Stingers

Why is Jeff Goldblum hanging out with Star-Lord in the end credits?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Burning Questions About The Post-Credits Stingers

The second adventure of the interstellar misfits may not have the same level of critical acclaim as the first movie, but at least there are five (or more like five-and-a-half) post-credits scenes for fans to relish. So don't be quick to head to the exit. (At a screening we attended, people actually bolted just as the credits rolled.) Not sure what to make of them? We have the answers…some of them. Let’s dive in. Spoilers ahead, obviously.

Q: In the first of the post-credits scenes, Kraglin (Sean Gunn, director James Gunn's brother) is toying with Yondu’s (Michael Rooker) whistle/arrow, and accidentally sends it into Drax’s (Dave Bautista) chest. Kraglin then makes a break for it upon hearing Drax’s angry scream. Seems like a funny but mostly inconsequential tease. What’s the takeaway here?

A: We can assume that Kraglin will likely lead the remnants of Yondu’s crew, and most probably be an ally to the Guardians in future movies.

Q: The crowd-favourite Baby Groot has grown to his teenage years, and is seen playing his video game in a room (typical teen behaviour). Peter Quill bursts in and asks Groot to stop playing and clean his room, but receives only an angsty “I am Groot.” For the first time, Quill understands what Groot is saying and converses with him. Does this mean Rocket Raccoon won’t be doing much interpreting going forward? Will Groot grow up in time for The Avengers: Infinity War?

A: Let's see, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 takes place four years before the events of Infinity War. Four years — that's a long time for a teen Groot to grow into the adult-sized Groot from the first movie.

Q: In the most significant post-credit scene, Sovereign leader Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), pissed off that the Guardians have escaped her, presents a secret weapon she calls “Adam”. Who’s Adam?

A: She's referring to Adam Warlock, one of the most powerful and storied characters in the entire Marvel universe. In the comics, Warlock was born in a cocoon, and he and Ayesha have always had a deeply complicated relationship. In the Infinity Gauntlet comic, Warlock has strong ties to both the Guardians and the Avengers, and is instrumental in defeating Thanos. He even has an Infinity Gem affixed to his forehead in the comics. Yup, that’s how powerful he is. Sounds like Adam may have a part to play in The Avengers: Infinity War? Guess again. Director James Gunn said Adam will not be in the Avengers threequel, but maybe Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Q: If you're observant enough, you may be able to spot The Grandmaster dancing to David Hasselhoff's 'Guardians Inferno' during the credits roll. Grand, who?

A: The Grandmaster is a cosmic being fascinated with gaming and chance. He's also the ruler of Sakaar, the planet where the God of Thunder will fight the incredible Hulk. So what's his connection to the Guardians? We think it's just a subtle plug for Thor: Ragnarok, opening in November. Don't forget that.

Q: In another end-credits stinger we see Sylvester Stallone’s character Stakar Ogord, aka Starhawk, rounding up his old gang – Aleta (Michelle Yeoh), Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), and Mainframe (voiced by Miley Cyrus). Who are they?

A: They’re all members of the original, pre-Star Lord Guardians of the Galaxy. But in the movie version, they’re part of the Ravagers, having worked with Yondu before his ‘betrayal’. Be ready for more of these tough-looking fighters because Gunn has hinted at a possible spin-off.

Q: In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, comic book legend Stan Lee’s obligatory cameo has him talking to the Watchers - which are these all-seeing cosmic beings - about his cameo in Captain America: Civil War as a FedEx man. (Very meta, we know.) In the post-credits scene the Watchers seemingly had enough of his chatter and left him behind on the desolate planet. Err…okay. So what’s the deal with this?

A: There’s really not much significance in this post-credits scene, other than the writers wanting Stan Lee’s cameos to have some sort of continuity. Of course, there's a theory that Stan Lee's character is a Watcher himself and that explains why he's playing different characters in the different Marvel movie — he’s just there to observe things.
