Get Massaged By Wooden Hands

This efficacious facial uses cypress tools to firm and lift.

They may look kinda hard and uncomfortable, but the stiff ‘hands’ made from the wood of the Japanese Hinoki cypress tree made for a highly relaxing facial that was as lulling as it was effective. In the (real) hands of a skilled therapist, the tools — which are shaped to work like human hands, so that’s four hands, if you’re counting — are dipped in grapefruit oil and gently glided across the facial contours to shape and lift the face, alleviate tension, stimulate cells and blood circulation, and eliminate toxins. After the first 15 minutes, we couldn’t tell whether we were being kneaded by the soft hands of the therapist or the wooden hands of the cypress tools — things were turning into a blissful blur. The end result of the facial, though, was quite real — the face was definitely more V-shaped (aided by Mary Chia’s lauded Mu v.tivate Mist Spray) and stayed firm, lifted and radiant for days.

The Hinoki Cypress Face Sculpting Treatment is 90 mins, $235 (intro offer, $180) at Mary Chia and Urban Homme centres.
