Best Audio Personality Zhong Kunhua Credits His 'Lawrence Wrong' Spoofs For Nabbing His First Star Award

And that's why the YES 933 jock gave a shout out to PM Lawrence Wong during his acceptance speech.
Best Audio Personality Zhong Kunhua Credits His 'Lawrence Wrong' Spoofs For Nabbing His First Star Award

YES 933 jock Zhong Kunhua was one of the big winners at Star Awards last night — he was named Best Audio Personality, and alongside co-hosts Hazelle Teo and Chen Qijia, (aka The Shuang, Kunz, Jia Trio) also snagged the title for Best Radio Programme.

The 39-year-old, who has been with the station 15 years, has gone home empty-handed every Star Awards for the past three years he was nominated.

Not anymore.

Speaking to 8days.sg backstage, a trophy in each hand, Kunhua dubs the moment "unbelievable".

"I wasn't expecting to go on stage because I think when it comes to [getting] awards, I'm always not lucky enough. I'm trying to collect myself, and it's been an amazing journey," he says.

Kunhua had one unexpected person to thank for his night's achievements. He gave a shoutout to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on stage, adding that the judges had "no choice to give him the award" because of their slight resemblance. And he was only half-joking. We think.

You've probably seen at least one of the many viral photos from last year where Kunhua was styled as ‘Lawrence Wrong’. Everything started because of a meme remarking on the resemblance between the two and Kunhua believes that has made him more popular.

"I think over the past one year, because of the spoof videos I've done of our PM, and me being known as 'Lawrence Wrong', more people have noticed me," he reckons.

Kunhua, who turns 40 in a few days (July 11), is planning to throw an intimate birthday party where he will celebrate his win with family and close friends. All jokes aside, he is most grateful to his parents for his latest career milestone.

"I'm thankful to my parents for giving me the freedom to do whatever I like, and for being my greatest supporters and always having my back. They tune in to my radio show secretly — they won't [mention] it, but they are always there, and I know that because they remember what I say on air and I would later find out they know things about me from the radio show ’cos I’ve never shared these things with them," he says with a smile.

Guess the memes brought him luck
Congrats Lawrence Wrong!
