Ex Mediacorp Actor Zen Chong Said He “Lacked Fatherly Love” Growing Up, Wants To Make Sure His Kids Never Feel The Same Way

So why did the 43-year-old actor rate himself just four out of 10 when it comes to being a father on the latest episode of A Night Under The Stars?

On the new episode of A Night Under The Stars, former Mediacorp actor Zen Chong, 43, and his son Eytan, six, joined host Darren Lim and his youngest son, Elliot, on a Lazarus Island and Kusu Island exploration.

Zen, who is best known for playing the cunning Robert Zhang in The Little Nyonya (2008), tied the knot with his long-time girlfriend Geline See in 2011. They welcomed his daughter Aryssa, now seven, in 2015 and Eytan a year after.

The attentive dad tried his best to keep up with his son's many questions during the trip, at the same time made sure the boy had lots of fun while playing the games Darren had prepared.

So why did Zen only rate himself a four out of 10 when it came to being a dad?

Zen and his family

Turns out, Zen had observed the way Darren interacted with Elliot throughout the day and felt there were areas in which he could improve.

“Before this camping trip, I thought I was a six or seven. Now, I give myself a four,” chuckled Zen.

A curious Darren then asked Zen why gave himself a lower score. “I saw how you taught your kid, and I think I have a lot to learn from you. Why do I think that? I can’t answer some questions he asks, but you can answer almost everything.”

Darren then humbly explained that it was only a coincidence that he was able to answer all the questions that day and that he was in his element after all.

Zen and Darren talked about the challenges and rewards of fatherhood

Darren also asked if there's anything Zen lacked as a kid that he now wanted to give to his children.

“I would always see happy families with loving parents. My parents weren’t like that and I lacked fatherly love. He scolded and beat me quite often, and when he left us I felt a sense of emptiness. Now that I have kids, I don’t want them to feel like they only have motherly love. I want to fill that gap for them, just like how I filled it up for myself,” said Zen.

The dads also agreed on how relationships with children go both ways and that it is important to invest time and emotions in your kids, so it can be reciprocated in the future.
