Xu Bin & His Wife Yifei On All The Tears They Cried (And The Hotpots They Had) When They Were Dating

The very-in love couple talks to us about their super-hush hush, almost four-year-long, Ch 8 drama-worthy (angry in-laws! airport outbursts!) long-distance relationship.

(This is an excerpt from our cover story on Xu Bin & Yifei from Issue 1142, Nov 9 2017)
It’s the first time we’re meeting Yifei, who flew in to town about a week ago. They’ve been dating long distance for two years — a situation that caused a lot of heartache (but more on this later). A few days ago, she and Xu Bin celebrated her birthday at Equinox restaurant, and we know ’cos he had posted pics of the occasion on his Instagram. While his IG used to be just a gallery of his selfies, or should we say shrine, to his handsome selfies, there are now — aww — pics of Yifei. “I can finally let go,” Xu Bin exhales, the relief in his voice palpable. “I have a lot of photos of her in my phone!” We wonder what's worse. To not be able to Instagram a pic of your girlfriend or if your boyfriend doesn't Instagram any of your pics. “I’m used to him not doing it so it didn't matter [if he never posted my pic],” says Yifei. “But I do post our pics on WeChat. My account is private so only our families and closest friends can see them.”

With her slanting eyes, teardrop-shaped face and mantou-white skin, Yifei, 27, reminds us of those classic Chinese beauties you see in paintings hanging from the walls of Chinese restaurants. In contrast, Xu Bin, 28, with his tanned complexion, massive peepers and jet black eyebrows, looks like a manga character. But don’t be fooled by Yifei’s demure appearance. Beneath it, as we would soon find out over the course of our chat, lies a personality so vivacious we can totally see why she's got Xu Bin absolutely smitten.

They met at a friend’s party when Yifei was studying hotel management at James Cook University in Singapore. “I wanted to learn something ‘cos I felt like I needed to improve myself. That if I didn’t become an actress, I could do something else,” says Yifei, who’s a graduate of the prestigious Beijing Film Academy. “I have no interest in joining showbiz now, though” she stresses.
