Xixi Lim Shares Bridesmaid Incident To Prove Pretty Privilege Exists

Does pretty privilege exist? Actress-host Xixi Lim is convinced that beauty bias is a real thing. 

The 37-year-old The Blockbusters actress shared this when she joined 987 DJ, Sonia Chew, on CNA Insider’s series A Table Apart.

When the topic of pretty privilege surfaced, she didn’t hesitate to say, “I can back this up!”.

Xixi went on to share a personal story from when she was a bridesmaid at a close friend’s wedding.

During a photo-taking session, she was standing beside another bridesmaid, who was about the same build as Sonia, when chaos broke out.

“I think someone actually moved the table, and because of the separation, my hand [and the girl's hand] wgot caught between the tables.

"We [both] went, ‘Ouch!’. [But] everyone went to her first,” Xixi recounted.

Xixi then acted it out the moment again, laughing,“ I was there ‘Ouch!’, she also went, ‘Ouch!’, and then [when] I looked up, no one was concerned about me”.

While everyone fussed over the girl, Xixi simply looked at them and said: “Hey, I also kiap-ed my hand!”

Sonia burst out laughing but admitted that she, too believes in the concept. She shared her own experience while filming with a fellow female DJ in Malaysia, where they had to spend the least amount of money to win a challenge.

Sonia then said they went to a store to buy dessert and bargained it down when the store owner told them it was RM5 (S$1.52).

“And I was like, ‘RM1 can or not?’. And he went ‘Okay, can!’, recounted Sonia.

“As we walked out, I was telling the other female DJ, “Do you think we just totally exploited the fact that we thought we were cute?” asked Sonia.

“Yes, you did," Xixi laughingly replied.
