Woman Seen Spitting Water On MRT At Other Commuters; Stops Only After Enraged Passenger Fights Back

A female commuter in Singapore has gone viral online for her behaviour on the MRT.

In a clip originally shared on Xiaohongshu, the woman was seen standing near the train doors, pouring water from a plastic bottle into her mouth, before spitting it out, aiming at the passengers around her.

The floor appeared to be a wet mess, with passengers quietly dispersing in order to avoid being in the 'splash zone'. The woman, however, continued her spewing spree, targeting a lady in purple standing in front of the priority seats.

That appeared to be the last straw for the lady in purple, who angrily charged forward in an attempt to snatch the bottle of water away. The two engaged in a brief tussle, during which Lady in Purple exclaimed, “What’s wrong with you? Nobody is offending you, right? This isn’t the first time [you’ve done] this.”

Lady in Purple eventually wrested the bottle away. Left without it, the spitting woman picked up her bag and returned to her spot near the train door, acting as though nothing had happened.

Although the video has since been deleted from Xiaohongshu, it has been reposted on other platforms, with netizens jumping in to share their takes on the incident.

One netizen wondered why it took so long for someone to snatch the bottle away. Others suggested the woman should have been reported to the authorities, noting that her actions were “equivalent to spitting” and could potentially result in a fine.

Another netizen commented: “She’s probably like that badge lady [who gained infamy for Covid-19 related offences], doing silly things after being confronted for drinking on the train.”

Several others pointed out that this was not the first time the woman had been seen spitting at fellow commuters.

Some comments were more comical than others. "Real life Merlion boarding the train to work," wrote one netizen, while another added: "It's too early for Songkran."

That said, some netizens were more empathetic. Many speculated that the spitting woman might be mentally unwell. While they agreed that Lady in Purple was right to confront her, they felt the former deserved some grace.

“Respect the woman who stepped up to stop the spitting,” one comment read.

Others suggested that “high stress” could have contributed to the spitting woman’s behaviour.
