“My dreams turn me on. They keep me going and turn on this fire within me. I think it’s the fact that my work is different every day and I act with different people all the time. I really learn a lot of things that I wouldn’t normally learn if I weren’t doing what I was doing. Acting is something that really gets my brain juices flowing. How many people actually enjoy their work? To be able to do something that I love and enjoy is a huge privilege that turns me on every single day (laughs). On the flipside, rude people turn me off (laughs). I encounter a lot of rude people every day, like those who make fun of others who are a bit bigger in size. I find such comments very unnecessary. At the end of the day, everybody is already fighting their own battles, and there’s no upside to casting irresponsible comments or being insensitive to the feelings of others. So why do things that have no upside to them?”

“Nowadays, a surprisingly good cup of coffee or meal can make my day. Good music on the radio brightens my day. Without fail, a good film makes me super thrilled and motivated. What makes it even more perfect would be if I had a companion who can analyse and chat with me about the movie after watching it — that stirs up my heart, inspires my imagination and brings joy to my soul. Sometimes, watching a good documentary or interview with an actor excites me too. That’s how easily thrilled I get now (laughs).”

“Creativity and thinking out of the box excite me. Recently, [my boyfriend] Ming Jie and I quarrelled over some small issue. His way of dealing with things is not to talk about it whereas I’d want to solve the problem on the spot. But I’ve realised that, sometimes, we must learn how to do things the other person’s way. So instead of talking about it, I just let things cool down. Afterwards, I cooked soup and gave it to him, and that broke the ice. So when we learn how to think out of the box, we learn and grow from it. Another thing that excites me when I work with Ming Jie is his knowledge and background in acting. We have many scenes together on Life Less Ordinary. I’d ask him questions about acting. He majored in performing at the Shanghai Film Art Academy and I can learn a lot from him in areas where I’m lacking.”

"I’m a foodie and I love trying out good food. Sometimes, my friends would recommend a nice Szechuan restaurant to me, and I’d finish my work quickly so that I can have dinner there. I get excited when discussing food with my friends (laughs). However, I gain weight quite easily so I hit the gym regularly to keep in shape. If someone tells me that I’ve lost weight, it makes me feel motivated too! I can’t stand rude people as there is no need to treat others with a bad attitude. Whenever I encounter such people, I’d just ignore them and not think about it. It’s an instant turn-off.”

“Sashimi. ’Cos it’s like food porn (laughs). I’m quite a big fan of sashimi. I love the feeling of it melting in my mouth. I eat it once or twice a month. It’s very pricey, so cannot eat too often (laughs). Music turns me on too. I love listening to jazz and classical music in my car. But if I feel like singing, I’ll put on the songs of Stefanie Sun, A-Mei, Jay Chou or JJ Lin. What turns me off? Fake people. Who likes fake people or fake stuff? Like, if you want to buy a fake LV or a fake Gucci, you might as well don’t buy, right? I’m very turned off by those who always wear fake smiles, and a mask in front of people. I usually just ignore them. I won’t even waste my energy to say “hi” or “bye”. Maybe for the sake of courtesy, I’ll just smile and then walk away. I won’t stay for another few seconds to [make small talk] with you (laughs).”

"I get motivated when viewers comment that my acting has improved. I also feel a sense of achievement when an office lady or someone who doesn’t really watch Ch 8 shows sees me and tells me that she knows who I am. It shows that I’ve made it (laughs). I love photography too, and I appreciate it when people take time to analyse my pics and make comments related to my skills and expertise. It takes one to know one, so that makes me feel good. I get annoyed when people direct unnecessary remarks at me in public. Once, I was filming at a location and some aunties who were watching us said rather loudly: ‘Film so much for what, no one watches the drama anyway.’ It was quite hurtful."

“I love to travel, and exploring new places excites me. That also explains why I love editing and making short travel videos. In fact, [my girlfriend] Kimberly [Wang] and I are planning to go to Korea end of this year for a vacation and I’m looking forward to just chilling out there. Both of us haven’t been there before and taking a good break will motivate me to work harder next year. I hate it when someone is perpetually late. It’s okay if the person is late once in a while, ’cos something might have cropped up. However, if someone has a reputation for always being late, especially for work, it shows how unprofessional he is. If we are filming, it not only affects him but everyone else’s schedules too.”

"I get excited when I travel to a country I’ve never been to before, and I don’t speak their language. It makes the whole experience more challenging but fun. When I first went to Korea a few years ago, it was hard trying to communicate with the people there. However, the easiest way to learn Korean is by speaking to the locals."
