Wang Yuqing Treating 10 Fans Who Vote At Least 10 Times For Him For SA2024 To S$188 Private Dining Experience
Local actor Wang Yuqing was so popular in the '80s that he received "200-300" fan letters every month and needed more than 10 bodyguards to escort him at events. So how is it that he has only been nominated for Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes at the Star Awards twice?
In an interview with Chinese daily zaobao.sg, the 63-year-old star, who's still best known for his breakthrough role in 1983 swimming drama The Flying Fish, recalled that the Star Awards only started after he left Mediacorp in 1995.
The first Star Awards was actually held on Feb 26 1994.
After leaving the industry to become an insurance agent, Yuqing continued acting as a freelancer and was nominated for the now-defunct Evergreen Artiste award in 2021 and 2022. He went home empty-handed both times.
When asked why he wasn't nominated for a Top 10 Most Popular award throughout those years, Yuqing said: "It's because part-time actors did not meet the nomination criteria back in the day."
Last year, after four decades as an actor, Yuqing finally got a taste of running the popularity race. Sadly, the award eluded him.
Thankfully, he has another shot this year.
The actor said he was very happy when he heard about the nomination, and even more so when long-time pal Xiang Yun had voted for him too.
Yuqing, however, is aware that competition is stiff.
"The audience who know me are all fans who grew up with me. The older generation may not be familiar with social media, but I do hope that these old friends will continue to support me," he said.
To thank everyone for their support, Yuqing will treat 10 lucky fans to a private dining experience at his restaurant Golf Spot Cafe & Bistro.
The dinner, to be prepared by a "well-known chef", is said to be worth S$188 per pax.
All you have to do is to vote at least 10 times for Yuqing, screenshot your votes and send it to 88371310.
