The world has been watching in horror ever since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Thursday (Feb 24) that has left many killed, injured, or displaced.

While many residents have attempted to flee the capital city of Kyiv, Ix Shen, who has been based there for the past four months with his Ukrainian wife of seven years, has no plans to evacuate as he wants to stay and help.

The former Mediacorp actor and Star Search 1995 winner appeared calm and composed in a recent Zoom video interview with The Straits Times, which he did from his balcony overlooking the neighbourhood.

He was standing in the same spot when he heard an explosion, which he estimated happened 20km to 40km away, on Wednesday (Feb 23) at 10pm (4am on Feb 24, Singapore time).

“It was a very instantaneous flash,” recalled Ix, who turns 50 next month. “For a moment, I thought I saw the moon being covered by the clouds, but the clouds would not have been able to move that fast. And then about three seconds later, I heard a very loud boom, which sounded different from regular fireworks.”
