Thomas Ong Says He Acted In One Drama A Year So That His Late Mum Could Show Off
In the last episode of Quan Yifeng's talk show Hear U Out, Thomas also revealed his mum's last words to him.
Saying goodbye to your loved ones is a heartbreaking thing to go through. But for Thomas Ong, his last moments with his mum, who died on November 29, 2012, brought some joy as his family had come together for the five months after she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
The 52-year-old star opened up about what her death meant to him in this week’s episode of Hear U Out, which is also the final instalment of the series.

Thomas, who talked about the toughest period of his life in last week’s ep, said: “[My mother] never knew how bad things were when I was at my lowest. I’d stay over [at her place] for a night once in a while with the excuse that I wanted to see her, but she didn’t know what I was going through. In the end, I pulled myself out of [depression] because my mum enjoyed watching me on TV. I’d film one drama a year so that she could show off in front of her friends and family.”
Mama Ong’s positive influence on him didn’t stop there. “When she was on her sickbed, she told me that I should be happy. They say humans are the most honest when they’re about to pass away. The only thing she asked of me is to be happy, so why should I be troubled [over trivial things]? All I need is to live each day filled with happiness.”
His mum will be always be in his heart
A visibly emotional Thomas then said: “When your parents leave you, it means that they’ve taken enough care of you, and that they think it’s time to leave so that they don’t become a burden.”
Thomas went on to reveal that his family remained close-knit after his mum's death, adding that he and his siblings each clamoured to pay for her hospital bills. “I’ve never seen any other family do that," he chuckled.

“All of us took turns to spend time with her in the family,” he said. “In her final days, my eldest brother decided to bring her home, and all of us agreed [to it]. We took turns to look after her.”
Looking back, Thomas says has no regrets as he thinks he’s done everything he possibly could for his mum. He said: “The feeling that you get when you know you’ve treated [your parents] extremely well when they were still alive is amazing."
