Sister Of Stefanie Sun Cutting Ties With Her Linked To Years Of Favouritism From Parents
Singapore singer and well-regarded national treasure Stefanie Sun, 45, has always been private about her personal life.
But it seems her sister, Sng Ee-mei, 40, is drawing back the curtains on what seems like a feud between her and the pop star, a feud that has simmered for a few years at this point.
In an explosive tirade on Weibo last Friday (Jan 5), Ee-mei revealed that her relationship with “so-and-so has been very weak” even after “trying to communicate with her in some way for the past three years.”
Her bombshell statement came when she wrote “I’m no longer sisters with a certain someone.”
“I’ve been living in [her] shadow for more than 20 years and I just want to find a release,” Ee-mei added.
Her post caused an uproar across Asia with many speculating what went wrong between the sisters, including how favouritism from their parents had caused the rift.
Seemingly catching wind of all the online chatter, Ee-mei again took to Weibo yesterday (Jan 7) with another post.
“It is true that there is indeed a little favouritism, though I feel what is more accurate is the leaning towards power and so-and-so is someone with power,” she wrote.
She mentioned this feeling in another Weibo post back in August 2022 when she revealed how she “had a really hard time in Singapore living between the ages 18 and 36 in the shadow of my sister’s fame.”
Ee-mei adds it was the primary reason she doesn’t associate being in Singapore with happy memories.
Netizens surmised that she has been discontented for quite a while now, pointing to their parents for the cause of the latest breakdown between the two.
“My parents may not understand this and have chosen to go traveling instead of visiting me in Australia even though I have invited them many times. That is disappointing to me,” wrote Ee-mei in a post dated Aug 15, 2022.
She also lamented about “not being the golden child” and how she never really wanted to be a doctor, even voicing out against it.
“Being a doctor was my parent’s dream for me, not mine,” she wrote in the same post.
Ee-mei reportedly graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in medicine.
Last Mother's Day, she mentioned a complicated relationship with her mum, whom she felt was disappointed when she didn’t become a doctor. She also said she was "judged by society a lot" for quitting medical school for a year.
A netizen previously criticised Ee-mei for being “childish” and “feeling the need to tell the whole world as soon as something happens.
“I am not a celebrity nor a private person. Who understands my situation?” she responded before going on about how she had heard worse insults before.
The two also have another sister, Sng Yee Kia, who is older than them. According to her LinkedIn, she currently works in the pre-school sector.
In October 2022, Ee-mei posted a picture of Stefanie in a group picture with her father standing by the side. She wrote, “My dad has been accompanying my sister all the time, and I’m a little envious.
At that time, when a netizen asked if she and Stef still communicate, Ee-mei responded by saying she had sent a message and was still waiting for a reply.
In the same year, she again wrote a Weibo post on how her parents chose to tell her they could no longer look after her two cats in Singapore.
“Guess I was being too ungrateful,” she said.
She ended the post by saying she would find a way for her furkids to come to Australia where she is based and that “… this is how cat ladies are made.”
Ee-mei has since compared herself to Prince Harry saying that she understood his struggles and that “… living in the shadow is hard.”
With so much tea being spilled, it was a little ironic when Ee-mei’s post last week mentioned not wanting to get involved in speculation among fans.
“I just want to live a peaceful life. The first half of my life is not easy. For the next half of my life, I hope you will allow me to live on my own terms,” wrote Ee-mei.
Fans of her famous sister have since asked Ee-mei to delete the incriminating post.
But in response, she defiantly replied on Saturday (Jan 6) that if “someone was to stop her little tricks, I would also stop”.
Both Stefanie and her parents have yet to comment on the incident.
