Sora Ma’s Businessman Fiancé Proposed To Her With A The Lord Of The Rings-Inspired Ring
The 37-year-old actress has been secretly engaged for two years but only decided to make it IG-official yesterday (Jun 7).
The 37-year-old surprised everyone when she announced on Instagram yesterday (Jun 7) that she has gotten engaged. Here's the other thing: Her fiancé actually popped the question in 2018, which 8days.sg found out after speaking to Sora.
So yes, the actress and one-time viral sensation, has been engaged for over two years without anyone finding out.
Here, Sora tells us why she and she her fiancé, a Singaporean businessman in his 40s, decided to keep their relationship low-key from the get-go and how she’s relieved to finally be able to talk about him in public.
8 DAYS: Congratulations on getting engaged!
SORA MA: (Laughs) Thank you! I’m still very overwhelmed by all the congratulatory messages.
On your IG post, you mentioned that you’ve been keeping your relationship under wraps for almost nine years. What made you decide to go IG official?
The reason we kept it a secret is very simple. As an actor, I feel that we should draw a line between our personal lives and career. I’m very lucky that [my fiancé] understands and respects my job, and I also didn’t want him to be affected since he’s not a public figure.
And I’ve also seen other celebs around me go public with their relationships only to end up getting negatively affected by all the attention and scrutiny. I didn’t want to risk that.
As for why we decided to finally go public, I think I needed to be fair to him and his family. He’s been very understanding and only told his closest friends and family, but I think it’s time I made things official.
So why June 7? Is it a special day?
No lah. (Laughs). I wanted to do it on days like January 1st, and February 2nd and so on ‘cos these are special dates, but I would back out at the last minute. Today isn’t a special day but I got a sudden rush of confidence this morning, which made me decide to throw caution to the wind and finally get down to posting about our relationship. Now that I think about it, I don’t understand why I kept putting it off. It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
Even for our dates, we’d usually go out with a group of friends unless we were going somewhere with not many people. When we first started dating, we couldn’t hold hands when we were out together. He knows how much passion I have for acting so he’s very supportive. He’s sacrificed a lot in this aspect and it hurts my heart thinking about it. At the same time, I’m very grateful to him for being so understanding.
That’s super sweet.
(Laughs) It feels weird talking about this since I’ve never really mentioned this to anyone, but I’m really very touched by all these things that he does for me.
That being said, will you be posting a pic of his face anytime soon?
I feel that we need to maintain a certain level of secrecy, so the answer is no. Some things are better kept to ourselves.
That’s totally understandable. How did you guys meet?
It was on the night of Star Awards in 2012. But no, he’s not in showbiz. (Laughs) He was introduced by a mutual friend during a meal after the awards ceremony, and we got to know each other better after that.
What do you like about him?
For one, he’s very thoughtful and supportive. I have to wake up really early for work from time to time. Back when we weren’t living together, he’d always wake up before me so he could dabao food for me and hang my breakfast outside my door.
Does he still do the breakfast routine now that you live together?
Another thing that I love about him is that he’s very steadfast. That habit hasn’t changed, and these days, if I get up at 5am, he’ll do the same and prepare breakfast for me. Now that I think about it, it’s very rare that he hasn’t changed at all in the time that we’ve been together.
